Do LG make Panasonic screens??
Discussion
there are only 2 or 3 companies who make the actual screens. The other bits are seperate such as tuners, remote control systems, menus etc.
I remember from working at Panasonic they really didnt want to step on Sonys toes too much as many components in Sony units (tv's stereos etc) were from the panasonic stable.
you do find that although only a few people manufacture they have lots of different versions and levels of quality depending on what the brand needs.

I heard that ALBA don't make anything, just rebrand stuff for the euro market??
I once bought an ALBA television. <shudders> It never worked for more than a week at a time. To this day, many years later, I wish I'd just dropped the little P.O.S. from a rooftop! Can't tell you for sure on the LG/Panasonic question, but very few companies actually manufacture CRT/Plasma/LCD screens and everyone else just buys and uses them. LG do make some very good stuff, though; I wouldn't worry about buying one if you like the look of it.
Sharing a display, and having the same internals is not the same thing.
You'll find if Panasonic are sharing the LG/Philips display, they'll be adding their own processing algorithms, etc.
Panasonic have their own Plasma manufacturing plants, which Pioneer are now using, with the general control internals, but with their own processing and menu design, etc.
I was under the impression Panasonic also had an LCD plant, but maybe they sold it some time back, to concentrate on expanding the Plasma one.
Bear in mind, Sharp manufacture their own panels, and whilst Loewe, owned in part (30%) by Sharp, get some of Sharp's output, often have to resort to Samsung/Sony for panels when Sharp can't provide enough for them.
Bottom line, with LCDs for the mainstream TV brands, there's little to no difference in the panels, but the picture processing is where the main differences come into play.
Like B&O using the top 1% CRTs from Philips, and rejecting those that failed to meet their testing in-house, similar things are likely to be at play with the LCD panel manufacturers - but to a lesser degree since the consistency from motherglass to motherglass is very good.
Motherglass is the single sheet that the smaller sizes are cut from.

Thanks
I am suprised that the guy in Richer sounds pretty much dismissed the whole Panasonic range due to the LG sets being the same thing for less money!
Better Margins perhaps? although richer sounds do seem to have some knowledgeable staff

I have a Panasonic 32" LCD (last years model, 100hz) and although the picture is only marginly better than some Sony's and LG's the Digital menu system is vastly better than anything else I tried. something else (if only minor) to consider
Surely Derestrictor could clear this up somewhat....where is he?
Who really makes your Plasma HDTV?
Very few Plasma TV manufacturers actually make their own plasma TV. Most use a system called rebadging. Basically they buy from a Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), claim to have a secret extra special feature then stick a new sticker on it and bill you thousands extra for the sticker. If you really want to pay thousands for a sticker please call our sales dept and we will sell you a sticker with our website logo for much less then the couple thousand you will pay Fujitsu or Runco
THE MAJOR PLASMA TELEVISION MANUFACTURERS
NEC - Nec is a OEM manufacturer and is now owned by Pioneer. Although owned by Pioneer they still operate under a separate label. NEC has commercial units and home units. They also supply screens to Marantz Runco and several other companies. NEC sold their plasma factory to Pioneer and now buys their panels from Pioneer and installs their own electronics.
Panasonic - Makes the complete units, Supplies Toshiba, JVC, Fujitsu and more
Pioneer Plasma - Pioneer owns NEC and has switched production to the NEC lines. The new 50 inch and the 42 inch units are all NEC glass. To tell if a 50 inch is Pioneer or NEC, check the resolution, If 1280 it is Pioneer , If 1365 it is NEC . 42 inch Pioneer Plasma TV is NEC . 43 inch Plasma TV is Pioneer Glass
Fujitsu Plasma - Only makes their own 42 inch in partnership with Hitachi . 50 and 61 inch Fujitsu Plasmas are Panasonic and NEC but the 42 inch are their own. Note Hitachi plasma screens are identical to Fujitsu and cost thousands less, 55 Inch Fujitsu is same as Hitachi,
Sony Plasma TV - Makes their own boards and chips but uses Fujitsu/ Hitachi plasma screen glass for 42 inch, 50 inch is NEC, 42inch EDTV is NEC
Hitachi - Owns 50% of plasma screen factory with Fujitsu. Makes own internal components. 42 Alis screens are Hitachi as is the New 55, 50 inch are Pioneer and 42 EDTV is a NEC screen
Philips - Uses Fujitsu/ Hitachi glass screen and most internal components as well. However, Philips makes its own bezel with built in speakers.
LG / Zenith - Make their own glass in Korea
Samsung - Makes its own components in Korea
THE SECONDARY MANUFACTURERS
RCA/ Thompson - Partners with NEC to OEM its product. Just a NEC with a new bezel.
JVC - 50 inch is Panasonic, 42 is NEC
Toshiba - OEM from Panasonic.
Sharp - OEM product through Pioneer for 50" and 42 though they may make some internal component changes.
Runco - OEM 50" from Pioneer and 42" from NEC,
Marantz - OEM plasma monitor from NEC. It is our understanding its just a sticker job
Studio Experience use a Samsung panel but custom electronics
Viewsonic - OEM 50" plasma screen from Pioneer ( old 502 ).
Sampo - 42v3 is old Fujitsu, 42v6 is Samsung Plasma,
Gateway: Units are rebranded Sampo
Norcent Units may be rebranded Sampo
Maxent is Sampo, There seems to be a rumor spreading around that maxents are actually Panasonic panels. These seems extremely unlikely as Panasonic cannot keep up with there own requirement. We suspect that maxents are actually LG glass with their own electronics.

Thats a really old American overview. Fujitsu pulled out of plasma manufacture over 18 months ago. I'm trying to get rid of a brand new one on Ebay now!Very few Plasma TV manufacturers actually make their own plasma TV. Most use a system called rebadging. We are Panasonic distributors and as far as I am aware they do not use LG electronics /panels for any of their products. To be frank I dont blame them. Phillips and LG operate a JV to supply panels. Loewe use Sharp and Samsung, B&O in the main use Samsung as well as 65 from Pana.
Pioneer are shortly pulling out of plasma manufacture via NEC and will procure panels from Panasonic [plasma] and SHarp [LCD]
IMHO forget LG and buy either a Samsung [ cheap but good picture ,crap audio though] or Panasonic [currently with a FREE 5 year warranty from independent retailers.
Good luck

Panasonic everytime for me, plasma over LCD as well if you care about picture quality watching "normal" TV.
Agreed. 37" and above go for plasma. Also dont be tempted to opt for full HD if all you're going to watch is Sky HD, DVD'S and SD TV. Its a well known fact that a full HD panel doesnt show SD pictures as well.

We have a FULL HD Panasonic 42 in the showroom side by side with an HD ready screen and the HD ready screen is slightly clearer when showing standard TV. If youve got a PS3 or Blu Ray player however then you might want to consider a Full HD panel.
Almost we used to say that about 37Lcd,s" and above for plasma but now Pioneer have fased out the 42" plasma and are now using sharp panels and i must admit was doutfull with this but the new 46" lcd from pioneer is the nuts. we have the new 32" Pioneer lcd in the shop amazing set.

I will be using it to watch SD TV but i want to run the pc and any future console purchases through it too. I was thinking about a PS3 for Blu-ray too.
I imagine that those things will still look pretty good through an HD ready TV?
All will look superb. just bear in mind that the majority of your viewing will be SD. All Panasonic panels now have SD readers also.I imagine that those things will still look pretty good through an HD ready TV?
