That's impressive. Trains on the sides of buildings (toward the end).

Does anyone think this will be feasible at some point on full scale trains? Or will the vast quantity of energy required be hard to create?

Mag Lev trains have been run in a few places round the world. Japan was doing a lot with them, though IIRC they scaled back when a power cut buggered a train that was levitating at several hundred mph.

As much as I understand and appreciate the physics, I'm not sure I'd like to put it to the test in a train around a building that's not attached biggrin

Interestingly most of the thinking, intellect and development behind these was (and still is) British smile

It is feasible apart from the massive costs incurred. I work on the railways and got hold of a very interesting dvd about the maglev system. It costs something stupid like £1,000,000 per metre, and also interestingly, if they can develop vacume tunnels large enoght then then reckon speeds of 1800kph can be achived. I think it curreently runs at 500kph!!!

The Maglev in China is in Shanghai and runs from the airport into the city, about 7 miles. It goes so fast that it has to start slowing down before it reaches its top speed otherwise it won't stop in time.

My brother lives over there and I went to visit him a couple of years ago. I took this photo, a bit blurry, but given the speed I think I can be excused

431kph is 268mph eek That's its top speed for the journey. It was fast!

There is a Maglev train running between Shanghai and the airport, the onboard display tells you how fast it is going, at top whack it hits 431 km/hr.

It was my first ever job - commissioning the Maglev at Birmingham Airport back in the 80s. Ahhh the night shift driving back and forward.

Sadly shut down - spares were too much frown

It's annoying the Chinese have it in operation, sending men to space, loaning money to the remaining super power but still claims to be third world.
