Dont buy an ST !!
Discussion
That was the advise my Dealer gave to me when I collected my Car after its overdue service this evening!!!
I was inquiring about possible Part-ex for a new car (downsize to a focus or something like that Kuga thing)
Anyway, I know the book prices for my Car (06 Mondeo 5 Door ST TDCI) and dealer offers me £500 below bottom book and tells me its not negotiable, he cannot shift ST's and only cos its a Diesel he would accept it.
He said they are not accepting Focus ST's or Mondeo ST's (petrols) as they cannot resell them.
Im quite happy with my car, but the mileage will soon be approaching 50,000 and will be time for a change.
Anyone else had this experience or heard about this ? Could it just be limited to my Dealer Franchise?

Maybe just don't buy any Ford?
Good start in the Ford forum...I'm guessing if it were a Zetec that he'd say "ooh we can't shift those Zetecs" and offer you £500 below book. Or he'd say "ooh we can't shift those in silver / black / blue / orange" and offer you £500 below book.
Go to an auction and buy an ex-fleet machine.

Yeh, so great cars but not from a dealership.

I wouldn't touch a Mondeo ST diesel EVER, far too many problems with injector failures etc. I was going to get one as a second car but would take a second 220(even with the problems mine has had!) over the diesel. These cars will be cheap as chips next year when the new VED kicks in.
Hi
lets face it, wether it is an ST in at Fords, VXR at Vauxhalls every dealer in the country is finding it hard to shift sporty Petrol or big engine cars.
With the "Credit Crunch" in full swing cars are the 1st place people are making cut backs.
On the up side if you do have spare cash now is the time for a bargin, i suspect there will be a few dealers ready to do some deals just to turnover some cash flow.....

Interesting, and you have first hand experience of this do you ?

I know HonestJohn says they are fuel sensitive and reckons some need to be changed at 60,000 miles. thats just something Ill be watching out for.
Well, on the flip side, IF I keep mine .. 40,000 miles and not even excessive brake pad or disc wear yet! and no engine problems to shout about, then the VED onto goes up from £145. a Year now, to £175, then onto £180 by 2010. (Compare to a ST220 petrol, which will go from £115.00 to £300.00 then on to £430.00 in 2010 )
Somehow The diesel figures look a little more attractive.. Plus the improved MPG ontop, and humungous Torque on offer for pulling my Boat / Trailer

the only downside is the crap material used to make what ford call "alloy" wheels. back to be refurbished again .. twice in 2 years

may i suggest that you dont go back to the same refurbers, because although the ford finish may not have been the best and they may have corroded as happens with lots of makes of vehicles including mercedes, once been refurbed if they were very bad or corroded they should have been dipped and the finish is then down to the refurber and should last for many years if done correctly.

I popped into a Dealer in Cardiff recently for a new wiper blade and i had to go round the lot twice!, just to find a parking space!. There were so many cars there!, i've never seen it so rammed!
On the subject of the OP's car, i'm looking for a Mondeo ST/Titanium X at the mo to upgrade the Focus. Need more space, but a lot of the ST's i've seen have been very expensive still, whilst any part ex or even private offers on the focus have been below trade value! Seems its easier to keep what we've got rather than change and have to pay out more money.

(Mondeo owner since 1995 & moderator on various Forums). Your happy about BS like "sensitive to fuel" & "replace the injectors @ 60K?"(plenty have failed at MUCH lower mileges than that btw, and the bill is aroud £1000, so given you may be looking at a £1000 bill after 40K miles then the 220's figures look more attractive
). EGR failures, PCM updates causing rough running & ESP problems, noisy pullys with TSB issued, the list goes on. Search some ST forums and you will see there are many that have had no end of grief, one guy only two weeks ago got shot as enough was enough, he now drives a Merc. I don't have first hand experience as i was going to buy one as a second car but after looking into them(& knowing someone who works @ Ford who's stated they have dropped the engine & management system for a reason) there is no way i'd touch one. I'm not getting into a diesel ST Vs petrol debate, i was quite happy to own both, but far too mnay issues for me. I hope yours doesn't turn into one of them
Dave, pick your toys up and put them back in the box mate.
Im not taking the piss and im not having a go.
The qn. was a serious one. I know HonestJohn says Injector failure due to being sensitive to fuel!! (hell, I put any old crap that claims to be Diesel in mine if its increases my fuel economy!), and, as you commented, you would never touch one.
Checking your profile, you appear not to have owned one but have been a mondeo owner since 1995 ( I too have been driving fords in one shape or another since my Mk3 Escort, and Sierra ). I was just wondering if you had first hand experience ( a friend, lover, bloke down the pub ?) who had one that suffered this expensive failure. ( again, as you have commented, you dont have first hand experience, but you have "contacts" who have confirmed this.
I accept your points. Personally Ive not had any issues yet, and, will cross those bridges as and when they arise.
Funny though how fords have managed to flog the 2.2 TDCI unit to Mitsubishi for their new 2008 Outlander too. Wonder if these are going to suffer too ?

With the same management system? Edited by JVaughan on Monday 29th September 10:54

It was the management system that caused all kinds of problems, old system, ONE injectior goes down, PCM shuts down(even @ 70MPH) flashes light at you and bye bye power, new system shuts down faulty injector AND balances other cylinders to cope!
Interesting. will have a chat to my contacts at FMC and see what I can get for free
