Don't know if I'm one of the unlucky people yet, mine was lost last time some retard had a laptop stolen.

I think it's pretty unfair to hear about it on the news rather than from our heirachy rage

Why does every news report blame the government?

Isn't this the civil servants and their contractors.

Maybe if they used a decent encryption system and not use windows things would be a billion times better.

The laptops and memory cards we hear about are just the tip of the iceberg i am afraid frown

I was watching something on TV about the MOD losing a memory card recently and they said that they had 'lost' something like 600 laptops over a one or two year period!

I wouldn't worry too much anyway, the government will sell your personal info if they don't lose it.

Suggestion of it being an inside job because there's no evidence of a break in

clap

Poor, lazy, populist reporting, resulting in a million and one anti-government internet grafitti threads on PH. What a waste of bandwidth.

Hang on aren’t civil servants employed by the government?

The problem from my experience is the lack of training for CS's when it comes to handling data on portable devices.

But I just can’t see how anyone whoever they are can be this stupid??

I mean I carry a lot of stuff on my stick and laptop but it gets backed up daily and I never leave my machine/stick with stuff on it if im away from it... i.e. leaving it in the back of my car....

Did I ever receive IT data handling training from the MoD when I did my placement.... nope.... have I ever received training now in my current place of work..... NOPE... just common sense something which is lacking from these individuals who probably don’t feel protection of such data is there responsibility?

Reading the report, these disks were nicked from a high security area of a military base.
Surely it would be service personnel who had access to these areas?

Civil servants aren't really employed by the Government. MoD don't all get sacked and hire all new staff with a new government. A civil servant has a job for life no matter how bad they are.

But do agree more time needs to be spent on a bit of security and training to use the security.

A notice would do....."Please keep this door locked. Anyone not locking this door is liable to face a firing squad at dawn. You are of course on CCTV, so we will know who to shoot. We will also shoot your union representative if they choose to try and intervene."

Soem may see the last bit as overkill, I prefer to think of it as a public service.
