Hi Guys, my diff was making some very noisy clonks. I have taken my rear top diff mount off and it is in 3 pieces. Does anyone have one they can flog me?
Cheers Brum.

Think Brummie may mean the mounting bracket?

Funny old thing, I've just taken off my rear diff mounting plate - it was badly twisted. On the MOT the chap gave me a cautionary for worn diff bushes which I knew was wrong because I replaced them with poly ones less than 2 years ago (all except the upper rear one I might add!). I'm just going through the process of removing the old bush in situ with the diff in, a real PITA job. But back to the bracket - I've ordered one from Racing Green, if you check their website the said bracket is on there. I think drag racing and hard launches must stress that part in particular, hence the damage. When I get the new one I'm going to reinforce it by welding plate steel on the back.

Changing the rear diff mount in situ? I thought this couldn't be done? im going to be doing mine sometime soon (been saying that for a while now!)

Would be happier doing it in situ... any pointers?

Mines in situ too, 8mm allen bolts on the back X4, then the one through the bush, 16mm heads. Big long extension for this, i have put a couple together and gone through the wheels! Orrible job though.

I wasn't sure if it was possible, but gave it a go anyway (as I always do !). I had to undo the four front bolts that mount the diff to the two plates, undo the four bolts that hold the rear bracket onto the diff, and undo the long bolt that goes through said bracket. In order to get the bracket out I had to jack the diff up and push it forward - this gave me JUST enough room to pull the bracket out (although it did need to be wiggled around a bit). Getting the old bush out was frustrating, but as diycerb has mentioned previously, put some heat into the steel sleeve and you can then tap it out. Getting the rest of the old bush out can be a drama, but I found the perfect tool for the job - a high speed air powered sabre saw. Room to manoeuver is tight, but this fed in just right from the side and cut the rubber and the outer sleeve out in no time. Just waiting on the new bits to arrive, and will be fitting a poly bush that assembles in two parts.

Its a good job the MOT place picked this up, as it could have snapped as I didn't notice any knocking sounds.

Take the diff out.

I tried everything to avoid taking mine out but in the end I bit the bullet, rang a mate for a second pair of hands, and out it came.

I should have done this to begin with.

It's still a pig of a job changing the mounting bushes with the diff out but it not near as bad as with the diff in.

As for the mounting bracket, if you can't get one via here then a decent engineering shop should have no bother fabricating one for you.

Mine is polybushed anyway, that looks fine, so "all" i will be doing is remanufacturing a more manly bracket and refitting. In the 18months and nearly 10k miles, this and a driveshaft has been the only drivetrain issues so far, and it has done 2 fighting torques, 3 quarter mile days, 1 Vmax, and a trackday, it sees no sympathy in day to day use either so its not that bad really.

Wonder if its the poly busings causing the mounting plate to fail. Flex has to occur somewhere.

Could be its made of metal about 2mm thick, as are the front diff mounts, the new one will be more like 5.

This is far more manly, a replacement is only £32, but i dont really want to be replacing these regularly!

The original is 3mm steel, my more substantial one is 5mm steel.
Pig to get in, had to slack all the mounts off and lever the diff forward.

the front diff mount plates badly, they are not strong enough (nor is the rear top one) we welded extra plate onto the front of the originals to make them stronger.the design is not very good really and a pain in the ass to do !!

Certainly a big increase, looking at your feet in the pictures as a comparison Brummie it must be more than 5mm shirley wink.

It seems to be a common problem when going over 500 bhp...

This is what happened to the one of the Wedge. It also broke its steel replacement - the 40 x 40 mm with a 3mm thick wall tube just twisted and teared. Now using two two tubes with bracing.
Brummie: worth checking all the mounting bushes including the gearbox ones as I found that they needed replacing as well as they ended up acting like temporary diff mounts.

No the resident action man took the snaps!

Steve, had a look at the front diff mounts, but they seemed ok, they are polly'd too, Plus as tinker said we beefed the plates up with 5mm steel ON TOP of the 3mm stock ones, the front left engine mount is now also polly bushed (the one that gets pulled) so thats all nice n stiff, i'll have a squint at the box mounts though cos i reused those. Cheers Brum.
