Thought I'd throw this one at you guys aswell as the STW massive...

Ok, I'm going Hardtail for the winter. I have a Giant Reign with Fox 36's and pretty nice/light build kit. I fancy a burly but light hardtail that I can stick big forks on, dig out the flat pedals, and enjoy it on some shorter rides, bit of street, long epics, etc etc over winter.

Looking for something to take either my 36 Float or a Pike, big tubeless wheels, full gears etc.

Any suggestions? I can either go new, getting my staff discount at work, or go 2nd hand. Tend to get better discount on bigger brands, but struggling to think of many?

Some I've thought of - DB Alpine, Cove Stiffee (mega£ ?), Orange Subzero, Whatever Konas equivalent is these days, etc etc...

Any thoughts? Be good to see your bikes that are on a similar kind of tangent.

Probably less than £300. Thats 300 real pounds on a 2nd hand frame, or something new which is not available at work (such as a Dialled Alpin I expect), or £300 on something with my staff discount, which should bring things like a Chameleon and possibly a Stiffee within range...

I reckon a cove stiffee or a cove Handjob are worth considering, I have both and they are really good.

I think the stiffee is the way to go on the Coves, it was my favorite bike, before I got a Hustler ( a stiffee with bounce on acid )

Atom - which size is your Alpine?

My Old PA was a 15, but I think the 17's have more standover now and I'd like the 23" TT?

Alpine is a 15" with 22 top tube, but I am 5ft 4 so a 17" would be like a gate to me smile The PA's I have are 15", I see you are thinking Genesis but drop Mike at dialled a mail see if there are any deals on Alpines he has in stock.

The Alpine is a very confidence inspiring bike to ride.

See if you can try a few, i think sizing is more important on a HT than FS. My £.02 goes to the Chameleon (which has 36's on it BTW)

I ran my old Cove with 36's on it, albeit at 100mm. It jacked the front up too much with them any longer.

Nice bike to ride, very true to its name, and was pretty hard work if you went out on a decent amount of time on it. I would consider something steel if I was in the market for an HT. Cotic BFe looks like it would win my vote smile

I've just put in a staff order for one of these -

The New Genesis Alpitude (see what they've done there?) 150mm fork capable, yet not quite as beefcake as the Dialled Alpine. As long as its not gonna be months before it arrives, my minds made up. Nice, isnt it? Cant wait to find out how cheap its going to be, and you wont be finding out!

Well the Alpitude was gonna take ages it turned out.

So I bought an Alpine, 15" Long TT, Deep Purple hopefully if he's any left.

My 3rd Dialled frame. Quite excited now woohoo

snotrag- How long is "ages"? I'm waiting on my local Genesis dealer to get back to me about an Alpitude frame but he's on holiday just now.

A month. Toooo long for me! But that will be different for different dealers. They come from Madison so you could ring them.

Cheers. That's fine with me as it going to be built with stuff from STW and Ebay so may take a month or two to get everything together.
