Gearbox Problem

[10 CYL]

Last night while driving my car in 5th gear, the gear box made a large clunk noise then I lost drive.
After pulling over to the side of the road 1st to 4th were ok, 5th will not engage without a noise 6th dont know, reverse is ok.
A bit disappointing considering I haven't driven the car that hard plus the car is reasonably standard, does anyone have any advice on what the problem could be? also does anyone know a person who could provide a new, or repair the gearbox properly.

How fast were you going, whilst in Fifth? Did the gear stick jump out of gear? or did you just lose drive?

I wondered if maybe you might have a shot synchro, but I'm pretty sure that it would throw out of gear if that was it... The reason that I ask about speed is because, if memory serves me correctly, if you drive in a higher gear than you should be, at lower speeds, it is more likely to kill the synchro on that specific gear.

Bernie at CTC (competition Transmision Services) might be able to help you out There just off Jcton 9 of the M1 01582 840008.

Loosing 5th and 6th gear is not uncommon.

The main shaft is two-part and the connecting teeth (see picture below) break.

However, with a stock car the break appears sooner or later "only",
if you shift under full power from 4th to 5th gear all the time...the enormous torque kills the teeth/gears.

There is one in Leighton buzzard but he want close to a grand for it ....Its a 1997 box......

Probally cheaper to get your worn out parts replaced. If you were nearer We could take out the box in my garage, then get it up to CTC for a look
