Dear all, a bit of a paranoid post here.

I was in my local newsagent a few weeks back and they were having building work done, it was really dusty in there and the chap apologised and said that they were doing building work upstairs- you could see the air was thick with dust. I must have been in there for about 3-4 mins getting bits and bobs.

I went in again today and the chap said that he'd been told by the people upstairs that it was dangerous asbestos that had been knocked out and that they's had to put the place in some kind of plastic bubble to get it all out. he seemed unconcerned but I am a little worried for both me and him- is there a 'safe' time to be exposed to this stuff? Should I be concerned or will a v.short period be OK? I read on the internet there is nothing you can do anyway.

Views welcome.

My neighbour died from lung cancer. As a result of Asbestos exposure. Hope this helps.

One tiny particle of asbestos lodged in your lung could give you a varying number of diseases...but the probibility of a particle lodging is slim..

Dont forget that people in previous generations used asbestos to fill holes in plaster, mix with concerete...and my father even used it to play with...

There appears to be a lot of hype about it, but IMHO its not THAT dangerous...

And besides...there is nothing you can do now...it might not show up for 30 years...

My Dad's elderly neighbour has a tumour on her lung which was caused by washing her husbands overalls which had been exposed to asbestos. Thought you'd like to know smile

Hopefully it's only white asbestos, cos if it was the blue stuff (crocidolite) then you're f*cked! I would certainly take proper medical and legal advice, you can find specialist asbestos lawyers on Google.

From your source:

Asbestos exposure becomes a health concern when high concentrations of asbestos fibers are inhaled over a long time period.[20] People who become ill from asbestos are almost always those who are exposed on a day-to-day basis in a job where they work directly with the material. As a person's exposure to fibers increases, either by breathing more fibers or by breathing fibers for a longer time, that person's risk of disease also increases. Disease is very unlikely to result from a single, high-level exposure, or from a short period of exposure to lower levels.

Seek medical advice - there's bugger all they can do to reverse the effect of exposure but at least there will be a record that you were exposed. Try and establish who has identified the presence of asbestos so if the worse does happen, you have a record as to who exposed you to it.

Id get a check up to be on the safe side, as the stuff is pretty nasty, but for such short exposure i shouldnt think there will be anything to worry about.

I recently had this problem. A pipe under the 1st floor bath burst and it bought down part of the ceiling in the room below.

The insurers sent out their man, who promptly ordered a test for asbestos. The suspicion was that the plasterboard of the ceiling contained asbestos. The tests confirmed that asbestos was present.

I was shocked. The house was built in the 1970’s and I thought it had long been banned. When I asked the expert when asbestos was banned it turned out that the government had connived with the industry by prevaricating and resisting for years. Finally they had stopped manufacture, but allowed old stock to be used up. It is therefore only relatively recently that asbestos stopped being used in building work.

In this crazy litigation culture, you might as well sue for the mental anguish of waiting years to find out if you will suffer asbestosis. It seems a more reasonable fear than worrying if your employer might make you carry alcohol.

Bear in mind that everyone is breathing in thousands of asbestos fibres every day, it's only people working with asbestos long term that tend to get problems.

Be very wary of it. Back in 1969 I had a holiday job which involved helping demolish a school hall where there had been a fire. In the area underneath the stage there were lagged heating pipes, I thought nothing of it and merrily ripped off the powdery lagging.

About seven years ago I developed a cough which has steadily worsened and which I've been to the doctors for several times until last December I found myself in A&E with breathing difficulties. I'm dreading the onset of winter - cold, damp air seems to make it worse.

My condition hasn't yet been attributed directly to asbestos but last year the doctor reckoned it a strong possibility given the job I'd been doing. I've resisted having further checks, not sure I want to know.
