Now then, it's my Mother's birthday on Friday, so I want to get her some nice chocolates delivered for less than £40, I'm thinking anything better than Thorntons' quality will do, not that there's anything wrong with Thorntons, but I just wanted to get something slightly more special.

I don't know if it's been covered before, but I don't think you can search the Food and Drink forum for some reason...

Definately well worth buying. Excellent taste and there never seems to be one in the box that you don't like!

Please, please, please don't buy Hotel Chocolat - it's slightly sub-Thorntons chocolate for the "thanks to the girls in the office" junior sales executive. Milk Tray for the Lakeside generation.

Go to the Purbeck Chocolate Co and a) buy something different and b) support a genuine business:

You must go to a different Hotel Chocolat to me. The selection boxes in the Bromley branch are 100 times better then anything ever sold by Thorntons, even when they were ate their best. Choose carefully from their mail order selection and you will get something brilliant.

Hi mate
check out this review
http://www.lovefoodlovedrink.co.uk/id31.html

Also, recently tried chocolates by William Curley and they were simply outstanding.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with Hotel Chocolat either - probably a slight notch above Thorntons, but no better than stuff you can get off supermarket shelves...

Sorry, my post was rather intemperate. Must be my age.

Someone subscribed me to the "different box a month by post" last year and I found them to not be very nice (in general) and tasted much the same, so what I should have said was:

Personally I don't like Hotel Chocolat, having had a lot sent to me. Purbeck chocolates are, in my opinion, far superior and not too expensive. I also like the fact that they're a small business, because I am mistrustful of shops that set themselves up as "premium" chains. Quite possibly this is a misplaced romantic notion though!

I have to say that my mum was less than impressed by the first mail order box she received but the ones in the shops are really rather good but, perhaps, variable in odd ways rather than quality. I suppose I just buy what I like which makes me a bit less critical.

Another really good company is Prestat, who do proper old fashioned chocolates superbly rather than keep on inventing slightly odd new "taste sensations". I think the problem with mail order though is that you just get the next box on the pile while you can choose the freshest box when in the shop.

Don't blame any intemperance in your posting on age - this is PH, the home of intemperance and right wing (apparently) views where the average perceived age by opinion expressed is about 75 (so I have 19 years to make up yet).

hotel chocolat is a bit of a case of "branding over alles".

theobroma cacao is excellent, and they will deliver.

Only buy them when in Jersey, they have a lovely little shop in St Helier. Thought Godiva were overpriced and not had Neuhaus, might have to give them a try though. yes
