Seriously tempted

What bothers me is why its so cheap considering how much car you are getting.
To be honest I've always said I'd stay away from Mercedes but looking at how cheap that CL is I'm bloody tempted. I'm even more surprised that my 2003 hatchback is worth more than the Merc! Granted the MPG will be worse but I only get 26mpg out of my current car.
Do all mercs lose value like this?
Any things worth looking out for and what's servicing/repair like on them?
Cheers all.

Mark.
This is probably the least loved or least desirable of the Merc bodies - plenty of people won't have a clue what it is - and apart from the mileage which is surprisingly low for this end of the market I would speculate the value is not miles off, perhaps they're going for a quick sale, cutting their losses asap? On the other hand they're rare and rather interesting even if it's just a less practical S-class so you feel a little silly.
Sacrilege for me as a Mercedes fan though it is, I think I would rather have a bangle 7 series which is probably just hitting this price now, instead of a CL. It is vastly more convingly luxurious and 1000x less plasticky. And doesn't have the stigma of being a late '90s era Merc where they kind of lost the plot a bit. But since I'm poor I'd look long and hard at the running costs and make a call. Additionally for me the 5.0 is sad because it only makes 306bhp - very torquey though I bet they are I couldn't help feeling a bit let down.
Would be interested to hear if you call/buy/drive though.

The 215 CL is utterly beautiful although, granted, taste is a matter of taste and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It also offers remarkable value because (1) it came only with huge petrol engines, (2) it has just been superceded by the 216 and (3) it is a large Mercedes coupe. Some have been known to have rust issues (especially pre-2003) and some have electrical gremlins (especially pre-2003 with Keyless-Go).

Fully agree (with all the points as it happens!) but then I am biased since I have one ....
Love the car, love the shape/looks (far more than the current or previous ones) and easily the most comfortable and relaxing car I've driven ... despite the niggles! What is there not to like?! ....

No, it is the last of the non-Komp models.
In fact, it is an '03 plate even though most of the non-Ks stopped at '52. Judging by just how much of the options list is fitted to this car, it's a safe bet that it is one of the last to leave the factory as they seem to have fitted everything (and I really do mean everything!)!
Blinds, fridge, TV, self-close boot and doors, linguatronic, distronic, keyless go .... the list just goes on and on!
The obvious external differences between the the Komp and non-Komp models are the tailpipes (pair rather than quad, slightly different tail lights and the lack of the 'V8-kompressor' badges on the front wings.
Rather amusingly, the MB dealer that I bought this from only had it in stock because they screwed up ans bought it within their group thinking it was a Kompressor car! Having seen what they paid I was n't unhappy with the amount I got it for

As for the OP's comments re fuel comsumption, he might like to know that I regularly get 28mpg, sometimes even getting nearer 30. Average seems to be around 26mpg.

Well mine currently has an issue with the ABC which my dealer is still trying to fix ... hopefully under warranty although if the ABC pump is shot it could be a little expensive!
That said, I love the car ... so much so that I have kept it even though I had every intention of selling when my GL arrived! It is just so quite, comfortable and capable. I would, however, make sure you get a car with a MB extended warranty! The car hasn't cost me much (yet) except in tyres and servicing but it must be really stinging the warranty company ...
As an idea of faults so far ....
- corrosion on rear arch (to be fixed under warranty but has to be done at one of a limited number of specialists)
- fault with keyless entry door handle on passenger door
- airbag harness fault (causing SRS light to come on)
- ABC fault (as mentioned earlier)
In addition, CLs of that age are prone to hardening/cracking of rubber in prop shaft couplings.
Google "recalls" and "CL" to get an idea of what MB USA have found.
Basically, make sure you find a good dealer to look after the car for you! You will probably find that most dealers rarely see CL55AMGs as they seem to be less common than you might think!
Types are a little pricey ... £300+ per corner I seem to recall ... and changing the plugs (all 16 of them) is around £500(!!!!) at a dealer!
Even so, I still love the car so hopefully this won't put you off!
