I've recently been getting several 'silent calls' on my mobile from 0800 0271502. It's the usual call centre bks where there isn't an operator available when the automated system calls so I just get silence.

Googling the number reveals it's Kwik Fit Insurance cold calling me, which is annoying as I never give consent form my number to be passed on and I rarely give it out anyway.

I'm registered on the Telephone Preference Service already and I've read the official Ofcom complaints procedure for silent calls and reported them. It's not a great deterrent - maximum £50k fine and they can just carry on doing it. I'll be complaining to Kwik Fit direct to try and get them to take my number off their dialling list but I know I'm not going to get much satisfaction giving a Kwik Fit numpty a piece of my mind. They'll be used to it by now.

So, having a hidden spiteful streak I'd really like to find a way to get back at these idiots for disturbing me at all hours of the day and night with these bloody calls.

Anyone got any sneaky ways to teach them a lesson?

I 'm sure there have been suggestions for "registering 'phone numbers suggested on PH?"

ran the whois anf got http://www.whois.is/whois-com/ip-address/kwik-fiti...

maybe subscribe the guy to some spam sites or send them a large and heavy envelope using the free postage for you "Freepost FU2" code

they use payper click advertising, someone good at scripts might devise a way to over use the service ?

but reporting them to TPS can work wonders

Selfridges did this to me a bit for no apparent reason. I sent them an e-mail. I recieved £20 in vouchers and an apology. Which I thought was a reasonable result.

From the TPS website:

"Complaints
Please note unfortunately we are unable to deal with complaints relating to the receipt of unsolicited text messages, silent calls or fax tones down the telephone.
However we are working closely with industry bodies and Ofcom to stop the nuisance of silent calls and fax tones down the telephone."

So they can't yet take any direct action against silent calls...

as above, this is huuuuge issue if Offcom think a company is taking the mick, Barclaycard got the maximum possible last week and offcom stated they wished they could have fined even more.

OP- report em/ask for something as an apology

Why can't you go to your telephone provider's website and enter a list of numbers to block, like e-mail?

That's the sort of service I think should be available but it isn't from my mobile provider.

I know, it wasn't so much a suggestion for you but a general question - surely the technology exists?

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to filter out nuisance numbers at the handset if CLI is passed through, but I don't know if this is a feature on any of them yet???

Would be a simple way just to stop the annoyance factor.

First of all, I do apoligise for this as i work for Kwik-Fit Insurance.
Did you by any chance visit a Kwik-Fit garage in the past and give out a renewal date for your car insurance ? If so, we would be wanting to transfer you to Call Connections.
If you PM me your details, (although you maybe dont feel comfortable doing it), i'm in tomorrow so will remove you from the dialler.
Yes we get complaints about silent phone calls all the time, and its mostly because the consultants take themself off mute when a call comes through so sounds on your end as if theres nobody there.
Either that or I can get KFI details to you and you can write to us and specifically ask for your details to be removed ?

Let me know.
Paul
Thanks for the help. Someone else (or you?) also PM'd me offering to take me off the list too. If you could publish here or PM me the details so I can contact KFI, I would prefer to do it that way.

I am not the only one getting these calls from Kwik Fit at the moment and they only recently started. I can't remember the last time I went to a Kwik Fit for anything (it would have been maybe 10 years ago?) and when I did I most certainly wouldn't have given them information about my car insurance and I wouldn't even have had the same mobile number then.

So this looks to me as though my details have been passed to Kwik Fit by a third party. Now I can't say for sure it wasn't with my consent but I do try my very best to stop this happening so I am a little suspicious.

Over the last 3 years the only marketing calls I have received on my mobile have been from British Gas (who do have my details because we have our central heating maintained by them) and then in the last couple of months suddenly I got a few calls from a mob called Space Kitchens who have had a 45K fine from Ofcom already and now from Kwik Fit.

The Space Kitchens calls stopped fairly quickly after they started once I'd spoken to a humanoid. The Kwik Fit calls have been much more annoying as they are silent calls when I answer them and I'm called so frequently (up to 4 times a day and often in the evening). There isn't an excuse for a call centre recalling that frequently and Ofcom states that an operator must be on the line if a recall is made within 72 hours of a silent call.

So in summary, thanks for the offer of help and please let me have the details but if you work at KFI I would urge you to also let your management know that this form of marketing may work in the short term and get you some quick business but silent calling and bad management of your call centres isn't going to go down too well with Ofcom and is likely to generate negative publicity and probably land you with a fine.

they can block numbers, but they wont, or are very reluctant to. The reason being is, it doesn't solve the problem so there is no point in doing it. well as far as harassment calls anyway. AFAIK, as soon as the caller puts 141 in front it bypasses the blocked bit, and/or the caller can/will ring from another phone and the harassment starts again... pointless blocking it!
