Hello all,
I have a 55 plate monaro vxr and on a couple of recent trips to the middle of France i notice that i have a clonking sound from the rear of the car, it is fine when in England probably due to lack of use, but when i travel long distances it becomes horrendous!! usually coming into a peage it will knock 3 or 4 times and sound quite brutal, dont mormally notice pulling away as the wheelspin drowns the noise! what can i do about this problem? The car has covered 18k with full history. Also a bit annoyed by the top speed thing which i think has been answered here recently, but not all bad news the car is really comfy and cruises well at stupid speeds, traffic and other things permitted ( and really quiet French autoroutes at night)

That`ll be the LSD plates rubbing.
Sounds bad but not a prob. Get your fluid checked when you can, that`ll sort it.
Got used to mine now.

Sorry for the hijack. Jez do you drive your Monaro regularly. I mean is a car that modified drivable daily?
Yeah almost daily at the mo, even left it at work all last week. Was a real blast on the way home.
Downside is that its just too fast to enjoy on UK roads so I just cruise about so av 27ish MPG.

I would say it's definitely your LSD unwinding. Mine does it all the time (similar mileage), and this is pretty normal for this kind of set up. The up side of having an LSD, is when you floor it, you should leave two black lines behind you instead of one. If you don't want clonking you could replace that (aweful GM diff) with an Eaton True Trac.I have a 55 plate monaro vxr and on a couple of recent trips to the middle of France i notice that i have a clonking sound from the rear of the car, it is fine when in England probably due to lack of use, but when i travel long distances it becomes horrendous!! usually coming into a peage it will knock 3 or 4 times and sound quite brutal, dont mormally notice pulling away as the wheelspin drowns the noise! what can i do about this problem? Jez - didnt think you used your car daily...? Seriously thinking about doing this with mine as its such a waste being sat on the drive but I have to do 70miles a day for work...
Well having got the Nurburgring driving game I`ve realised I`ll kill myself in the`ro` first time out as I`m a bit stupid sometimes.
So just had a big brake and suspension jobby done on my Astra daily driver which took a wee while.
Gunna take that, its only 130HP so should be safer, go`es round corners now too and stops well.
Hence using the `ro for work and the van for days off.

Whats the advantage of a Tru Trac...? apart from the clonking that is.
For daily use it seems it runs more like an open diff rather than an LSD.
Don`t think its a plate diff more like the Quaiffe ATV.
Not strong enough for us though I think.
