USA equivalent to Companies House

I am trying to find out if a company exists, I have got their name and address in the USA but I'd really like to check the equivalent Companies House. Are companies incorporated by state, e.g. are there 50-odd places to check? If so, is there a single place I can go to which checks them all for me?

I'm sure this question popped up here before and I am pretty sure that the answer was that there is no central national registry of companies/corporations in the US as they are kept on a state by state basis.

Pain in the backside. The address I have is in Maine, so I could start off searching there.

I am pretty sure that a UK individual has given a fake address/company name in the USA, and I want to recover the debt against him - part of this is showing that the "company" doesn't exist.

As mentioned, business registrations are handled on a per-state basis - the usual thing to look for on t'Interweb is 'Business Entity search'.
