Somehow, I don't think 'cos it's so flat' is the complete story of why cycling rates are so high in Holland.

Making a bike crossing default to green, and the cars have to wait is one way of maintaining momentum, but I suspect it wouldn't be acceptable over here. How I wish that my commute was like that.

Its a whole different world over there.... i lived in Amsterdam for a year and always really enjoyed my commute as there are cycle roads with traffic lights etc wherever you go..... bikes also have priority over cars so they are very wary about hitting you!! i love my cars , dont get me wrong, but when i was there i never missed driving.
The likelihood of this ever happening in the UK is virtually nil but they could sort the centre of London out surely..... you hear that Boris!!!
