Hi everyone,

I was wondering what the limit is for the number of lanes a red light camera can cover? Hopefully a BIB could confirm this, but can a red light camera cover as many as 3 lanes?

If this is the case i am stuffed. No excuse really i know but i have just returned from working in the states for 3 months and driving around in a rental car. As anyone who has been to the states will know, the traffic light sequence is very different to that found in the UK in that the amber phase before the light turns red takes about 12 secs to cover large trucks going through etc.

Anyway, i got caught out today by the 'quick' 2 second amber and went through amber so that only half my car was over the line before it turned red The only problem is that a nice new relocated camera has been placed facing the 2 lanes and turn off junction that i got off at (i.e. 3 lanes in total.) I was doing 10mph at the time but that won't make a difference i guess. I belive the induction loops on the camera are activated on red so my rear tires would have triggered the scamera.

Sooooo, what is the likely outcome? I have had a clean licence for 3 yrs and my mum committed a similar offence in her Merc in our town 16 months ago and got off with a stiff warning in writing. I just hope this happens for me or that there was no film in the camera

Otherwise, will they send me a NIP? Is there any way to fight it like a speeding NIP? ( ) The only problem is that i will have to bend over and touch my toes big time when it comes to insurance because i am 21 with a grp 15 car :s

Any advice at all is most welcome and thanks for listening to my plight

A camera in a traffic light WILL cover 3 lanes. Your only hope is that a dummy flash unit was fitted and the camera was not live.
If you do get an NIP you will probably recieve 3 points and £60.00 fine.
Also 99.9% of traffic lights have a 3 second Amber phase.

Will Crash,

Thanks for your reply. I can only hope that there was no film in it and that it is just a dummy. Can you think of any reason though why my mum got off scott free for the same offence only 16months ago? they mentioned that she had no previous convictions etc so they said that this time she was lucky, next time she would have to pay the consequences. Maybe i have a lenient local constabulary, but if caught, i don't think they will show such discretion towards a young driver with a nice car. Where do you work out of interest if it is suitable to post online? Any other offers from other people?

Thanks in advance,

I work in The Met Police District. I cannot understand why your mum recieved a warning, it is not someting that happens here in the Met.
Put quite simply the film technicians just deal with each offence in the same way, unfortunately they do not have the option of discretion like a Police Officer

Thanks Will Crash (optomisitic name )

Ok, for all you die hard PH'ers out there, let's say that the camera unfortunately had film in it, how do i go about fighting the NIP? Is it a case of visiting pepipoo and getting a draft letter together to hit them back with?

Thanks,

Henry

bttt

Surely someone knows how to contest a red light camera NIP? It is not urgent because i have 2 weeks to wait and even then nothing may come of this, but in the mean time i thought that you guys could ease the pain of waiting

A mate of mine (bib) went down to where they process the film that comes out of these cameras and was looking over someone's shoulder as they were "working". They came across one example of someone who they concluded was probably driving an auto who got caught on a traffic light camera for creeping over the line. When my mate asked what they would do about it they answered process him. Even he was surprised, they knew he had not run a light but as he broke the law and they could prove it so they nicked him anyway. I wish you the best of luck, you are going to need it!!

I thought red lights had to have amber phases that match the speed limit - ie in an NSL the amber phase is much longer?

I've decided, if i get a NIP they are going to have to try very hard to get my money. I can afford court etc so this is where this is going to go. Hopefully labour will be out soon, Brunstwat will be removed from his position and some sensible policing can come about from this dark area of Britain's history

Alas, when Labour eventually do get thrown out I doubt very much (regardless of pre-election promises) if the next set of Muppets will change anything. In the past whenever a method of taxing has been implimented by a previous government it has never been removed. They just take the money from it and blame the previous bunch for doing it. It is all bollox!
