Can't believe it, I though the 360 would go first (it's 2 years old). I just had a quick bash on COD4 when the screen just went blank, now the PS3 will not read any disk, the drive doesn't even spin up when you put one in.

I presume this is blu-ray drive failure, how much is a new drive going to cost me?

Mine died two and a bit weeks ago on a Sunday with very similar symptoms, while playing CoD. A round ended, and it just sat at a black screen until I killed the game. After that, if I turned the PS3 off at the mains, left it 30 minutes then powered up and got stright in to CoD, and got in to a match immediately, I might get 1 round before it stopped working completely, as before. Then it refused to do even this.
Sent the service request to Sony that Sunday, the special shipping box turned up Friday, got posted back to them Saturday, was returned this Monday. Time in transit, 2 weeks. Time being looked at, 1 day.
Was still in warranty so all completely free of charge.
Out of warranty, I've heard the cost is about $150, so probably around 80 quid.

I've had the same ....
Raised service request with Sony, who sent a replacemtn ps/3 .. which is a refurb
that dies 3 days later in same way.
called sony, they sent out another refurb ...
when the courier dropped it off, he told me that he normally has about 20 ps/3 swaps a week. all with the same problem.

All you need (or should need) is the original receipt, or a photocopy of it.

Mine was repaired not replaced. At least I assume so, as it had the same serial number.

Mine did it, seems it is "the" problem with ps3s, I was lucky I got mine from Game, straight swap over the counter for a new one.

Is that that new special edition 360? All the ones I've seen have had a red ring on the front hehe
