Formula 27’s are certainly not junk, but the pedigree isn’t as well known as many of its contemporaries. At the price, it’s got to be worth looking at. As accident rightly points out, standards can vary greatly.
If it looks good, drives well and has a decent motor then at around £4,000 you’ll not go wrong. If you keep it in the same order, it’ll still be worth £4,000 in a year or two or even five. So it should represent a sound investment from which you could either “trade-up” or “bail-out”, depending upon what enjoyment it brings.
If it looks bad, rattles and rolls or has a knackered engine, then walk away. Unless you have the ability and inclination to bring it up to scratch. Obviously adjusting the price to take into account what needs doing.
Some people actually like taking on a “project” requiring some work, because they can not only save dosh, but also get into the banter when asked “what’s under the bonnet” and “did you build it yourself”.

I know you can't tell that much from a photo, but this one looks really nice quality. The engine is an 1800 Pinto with twin 40 DCOE's and I'm not sure about the other stuff.
Having never even been for a spin in a 7-type motor before I would most probably be blown away by even the crudest kit. I know build quality varies enormously on everything but I was just after an idea of where the 27 sits in the greater scheme of things.

I've never heard anything bad about the formula 27, so it's got to be worth looking at even thought the 1800 pinto is an unusual fitment for a kitcar.
Just to be safe side could you schedule a couple of test drives in other sevens on the same day, to make sure you don't get carried away?
