Wii + HDTV...

Just bought myself an HDTV today and was surprised I couldn't set the Wii to the 'HDTV' mode (480P).
Any reason why not? The only thing I can think of is that you need the component cable (which I will buy tomorrow I think ) to get 480P instead of 576i or whatever the 60Hz setting is.
Any other ideas?

why would you want the wii in hd, wouldnt imagine there would be much difference with there cartoon style graphics

Yeah you need the component cables, be prepared for the tiniest difference in picture quality you'll ever see.

Yes, you need component. It does make a difference albeit not night and day. A more solid picture with no fuzzy lines that you sometimes get with RGB/Composite input plus looks better when you have fast motion on the screen.

It's not HD, you get progressive scan output instead of interlaced. Resolution remains 640x480 or whatever it is...

In response to the guy that asked why, because it looks pretty awful through composite on a 32".
It must be awful on a massive TV.

I play Wii on a 50" Plasma. Perfectly usable with component. With Wii, it's all abotu the gameplay with friends so blocky gfx don't detract a whole lot.

I use a component cable to connect the wii up to an HD resolution projector which projects on to a 72" screen and it looks fine... not pin sharp but perfectly ok. I imagine it would look appalling with a composite cable.

One thing I found with mine was that on my Samsung 32" with the component I could set the wii to 480p and it looked really sharp compared to the composite.

When I upgraded to my Sony 40" and did the same it looked awful, have to set the wii to the 576i setting or whatever it is. Very odd and can't understand why it looks so bad on the sony?
