Probably not a discussion you were expecting but...

Is it true that if you flash traffic lights in the dark they change to green pretty much instantly or is it just that you have driven over the sensor on the road that they change?

If you activate the hazards and toot your horn 5 times at them, they also change.

But you might find a house brick through the rear window hehe

The temporary ones at roadworks certainly used to, but don't seem to any more. I don't think permanent lights ever have.

You should have used your luck with the lottery instead of the traffic lights. You could have flown around instead smile

The best way to get lights to change is to knock it out of gear and put the handbrake on!

The best way to get the lights to change is to approach them at exactly 34 miles an hour - the moment you hit the line at that speed, they'll change.

Honest.

The lights at the end of the M4 spur in to Heathrow used to change for buses in the bus lane when they flashed their lights.

Of course, if they just stayed on the main 3 lanes and flowed with the rest of the traffic they wouldn't need to flash rolleyes

Indeed. In many cases I imagine it's the car driving over the induction loops in the road surface that triggers a change. Of course, if they flash as they go over these it will seem like they're making teh change but no.

I was told by an ex-Police driving instructor that there're either motion sensors or induction loops to indicate the ECU of the presence of any traffic. If I'm stuck at one for any length of time I let the car roll a bit and that usually works.

I find it really funny when people sit and flash their lights incesantly at them. SWMBO's one of them.
