Possibly

Could be a witness to an incident that they are talking to.
Could be arranging the next team building intitiative for the specific Roads Policing garage for that area.
Could be one of many things but sinister, I think not!

We had Cheshire police manning a speed trap on the start/finish straight at Oulton Park a few years ago at one of our race meetings!

Nothing sinister there though - it was all part of a safety awareness campaign that they were running, and tied in with a display they had there. Very interesting and thought provoking now I come to think of it.

Yes - they do do this at some venues (looking for stolen bikes mainly I believe - which I think is a good idea)
Alternatively they may be assessing the likely placing for a scamera van next week

I was at a sprint last year, and the local trafpol came along (quiet Sunday) to see what was going on. Had fun with his speed gun clocking the competitors out the gate and along the main straight!

So maybe it was just dinner time...

this is a regular show at donnington. A LOT of stolen cars/bikes turn up as "track tools"
its an easy hit for the police to turn up and do inspections to cacth the sellers/owners etc.

saves loads of time in detective work, the bikes are right in front of you! they can get several sinister cars/bikes in a few short hours, thus deterring further thefts, as if you cant sell them, it aint worth nicking um mentaility.

Im happy to see them there.

The only time I've seen a Datatag scanning gun was at a testing day at Snetterton. They turned up and ran it over all the bike at scrutineering, didn't get that many bikes but found a fair few wheels, petrol tanks and other bits that were tagged and had found their way on to race bikes.

Last time I saw rozzers at a race track it was following a fatal crash in the racing on the previous day.

(MRO Brands Hatch last year)

I guessed they got Traff Poll to investigate 'cos it's pretty similar to a road accident.

Or maybe they went to gloat: "You see! We told you speed kills!!!"
