Noisy M12 on start up
Discussion
My M12 GTO 2.5 makes a rattling noise on start up when cold. This sound decreases a little as the engine warm up. Sounds like a tappets noise. Any ideas or anyone else come across this. The car is 2003 and only done 22,000 miles. It’s not horrific but now I have noticed it and its got worse it’s really irritating me now
The factory did mine about 2 years ago. Not an engine out job. About 8 hours though
Early tensioners had an issue where the "ratchet" or whatever does not stay taught, causing the chains to go slack overnight. They rattle until the oil pressure pumps them back up again.
Mine used to rattle when cold, but were quiet on a hot start.

Hmmm. Tappet rattle. Is it at the top of the engine? If so, this might be what you're after:http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
Mine makes this noise as well on start up, noise then gets less and less as it warms up then once at operating temp is gone. Does your noise go up and down with the revs? Been back to the garage a couple of times for this and a few other issues but has just been put down to noise from cold as it takes ages for the oil to get round. design fault???
Well having visited the garage I have been informed the noise is wear and tear not an item claimable on the warranty.
I have been told it’s an engine out job to replace the belts and that’s about 30hrs???!!!
I think I will live with the noise when it starts up it is annoying but not annoying enough to substantiate a 30hrs labour bill!!

The timing chains can be changed engine in-situ. The factory charged me about £900 all in....
