surely now is a good time to put it in a FTSE tracking fund? The FTSE is approaching what may be a low, so if you are in it for the long haul, I expect you will get a decent chunk of allocation.

It's not worth investing in gold. It's not worth investing in ftse. How long are you willing to invest for? Patience is key.

What are you suggesting people wait patiently for?

The bottom obviously - or at least a sign of it, which we're far from in my opinion.

I'd stick it in Tescos, Energy Companies, and anything that Warren Buffet is buying.

Bit late for gold... by about 13 months. Would be waiting for some indication of a turnaround before investing long term.

confused >5% how do you mean? 5% a day/week/month/year? Since the beginning of the year? (If so I fail to see how unless you're going short). Either way, i'd be far from happy with 5% PA.

I think FTSE was yielding around 4.5% at turn of year

Well count yourself lucky if come December you even see a profit, let alone 4.5-5%. Even so, if you're aiming that low why not just stick it in a savings account for 6% PA - at least it's risk free (or was before all these banks started failing/getting taken over tongue out)

I am happy to take risk in the hope that, long term, I will outperform cash. When boring blue chips such as BP are yielding 5.5%, to me that is a good buy.
