i seem to recall some PHers living in LU?

i was asked a month or so back to consider a secondment to NE france. yesterday i was told i have until christmas to make up my mind. am currently <50% interested as the immediate location doesn't appeal. [sub 1hr to the 'ring does tho!]

had a quick browse around some french property websites and nothing takes my fancy. i'm only young [27] so am not ready for rural tranquility just yet.

i am told that it is a 15-20min drive to the luxembourg border and the city itself can be reached in under an hour by road. i would imagine the train would be quicker.

so i was really after an opinion of living in LU and what the cost of living is? have had a brief look at property and was shocked by the high prices. how expensive is it compared to the UK and over the border in france? i belive petrol is cheaper but can;t imagine everything else being so.

cheers,
phil.

I think alcohol and tobacco is tax free in Luxembourg, that's about all I know laugh

However last time I travelled through the country they had invested quite a bit in a nice bit of motorway.

Not helpful I know :P

rural france appeals in that i could buy a big farmhouse and some land/workshops for a reasonable price. could rent the spare rooms and finally get some project cars on the go. a citroen ds would be nice too!

wouldn't mind the chill out and the farmer's daughters, but the thought of living somewhere quite sleepy isn't what i'm really after. have been living pretty much in isolation [despite being in a city!] for 2 years now and i need people and parties. have had 2 recent interviews in amsterdam and the contrast between there and moselle is chalk and cheese!

lux ticked the box of being a city with a large international community but other than that i know nowt about it.

i gather wages are high there but then i fear mine in france may not be sufficient in comparison[will be £35kish basic + bonus + whatever i can screw in relocation].

I suppose it depends on exactly where in NE France you are talking about, but there are cities there too, Strasbourg, Metz, Nancy etc. Never lived in any of them, so I can't advise specifically, but they may be other options to consider

it's good. I'd move there. More so if you are your age as there is a sizeable ex pat community from different countries who are there for Euro or Financial Services reasons so you'll find plenty of people around your own age. Perhaps transient - here for a year or two then on to the next off-shore location.

Good friends of ours have been there 9 years now and are well settled. Don't see them coming back soon. They live in the Grund (area just below the old city ramparts) and there's plenty to be doing. Couple that with links elsewhere and I reckon it wouldn't be nearly as bad a place as many will make it out to be.

That said, I've only visited for work reasons or to go and stay with said friends. Never lived there.

metz is about 15miles from where i would work. nancy is a bit too far and sounds ghey! germany is also an option.

our guy over there now is coming back becasue his OH hates it which doesn't bode well. she doesn't work [young daughter] and has found it hard to integrate, whereas he has at least had colleagues to make friends with.

i will be at least a generation younger than most of the guys there. i don't speak french and all meetings will be in french including a monthly report to the MD. sounds like a steep learning curve and i will be on my own without the safety net of my much more experienced colleagues in the uk. with all that pressure it would be nice to live somewhere where i can socialise in english and kick back.

hmm, am not selling this to myself really am i..........

work in the netherlands would be on the coast. i'm a heavy industry bod, not FS. have always loved amsterdam and have had my dream houseboat fully drawn on solidworks ready to build!

drugs i can take or leave, have gotten that largely out of my system.

tbh i have 3 options on the cards, none of which i can start looking at super seriously until early spring and was just sounding out what lux is like.

3rd is france. this is the least popular option as its doing the same job i do now but in french. i reckon i can bag the job easily over the other candidates [they are married with kids, i am the cheaper option!] but i don't know if i fancy doing this job longer term.

2nd is london. this means quitting the company and taking a cut in seniority to find an opening in another industry - most prob oil & gas on the engineering side. the only reason for moving to london is my OH as she lives there. the money would be nice and it'd be a platform from which to work anywhere in the world, but i feel i'm being emotionally blackmailed to live somewhere i wouldn't choose to.

1st is the netherlands but she is reluctant to move despite saying she would when we visited in april! would be working in the same company but in a miles better role/industry and my salary would match what i could get in OG. have also got friends already working out there and never tire of seeing a pert female backside smile

the france/lux option is the newest and least thought out. am still up for the freebie fully expensed visit and keeping an open mind smile [can you take hire cars to the 'ring........?]

feel free to chew the fat on any of the above. i have too much time to myself and its all i think about and getting stressful to do so. i need to leave this city before i resort to rocking myself to sleep wink

Step outside your comfort zone. Learn another language.

You'll be a better person for it.

Besides, chicks dig it when you talk foreign, like. smile
