My bosses, boss attends therapy each week.

Get an email from him today stating he's in a state about last night's session.

What do the PB people think about therapy?, good thing or do you think people should just get agrip and just get on with life and stop taking and thinking about it and do something.

Tricky one. Useful in terms of coming to terms with something vs. constantly going over things and preventing them from moving on. Can be overdone IMO and lead to peopel being a bit victimy.

Some of us do, most of us don't.

There are 2 schools of thought, the first being that it is good to talk about things with a third party who is skilled at making you think about your thoughts and how you deal with them. The second is that it is negative as it reinforces the issue by refreshing it all the time, a bit like scratching a scab.

Over to the Rebuker...

Just sounds like they talk about the same old stuff all the time eg ex wife, the "Friend" who is married who seems to pour out her soul to him instead of her husband, I wonder if he posts on here!

Why not just park it and move on.

The latter tends to happen far more often with the vicar's wife decides to be a consellor type, (with apologies to any here who are), who IMHO have a higher likelihood of using a 'there there, isn't it awful, do tell me more and help yourself to another cup of tea and slice of bettenburg' sort of approach.

Thats not to say that approach is completly without merits. I personally quite like battenburg. Therapeutically questionable though.

A good therapist/counsellor will make you work with the issues and at times it can be painful and potentially unpleasant. What they also will do is help you to confront the issue and find ways of dealing with it. Simply rehashing it just scratche the scab.

Immediate post trauma counselling of the 'we've just flown a bunch of therapists into the site of a train wreck' model can be useful, but for a small proportion of the survivors. It can make it a lot worse if you are forced to rehash things too soon.

A lot of (american) people visit therapists because they have no one else to talk to.
A lot of people already have friends to talk to.
A lot of people get confused and think the young lady wanted to visit "the rapist" (ROD!)

But most of us rely on......PISTONHEADS. because therapy matters

Talk therapt can work - traditional sitting down and talking words for some issues.

Then there are other ways that deal with the issues in a more proactive way, but it's not right for everyone. My business is the latter, I deal with rape, male rape, abuse, dealing with cancer trauma, PTSD, bulimia, anorexia, addictions, fear, phobias, infertility issues, trauma, guilt, depression, anger issues, relationships and much more besides. The approaches and the modalities I use in mine are pragmatic and direct - none of this 'lets talk about this whilst having a nice cup of tea stuff' (though I will indeed put the kettle on!) - it's more about dealing with the emotional side, applying science and logic to the logical side and working on the subconscious programming to create a balance.

The thing about this 'stiff upper lip thing' is that it well and truly fks up many people and it has done so for years and years - because it's the most damaging belief that actually stops people doing something about their issues in the first place.

Sometimes it just helps to speak to a complete stranger. Then there is no holding back.

No, I'm saving my monkey business for a nice bloke who dresses leather wink

He's a very open person and emails us all on things and also face to face. He worked for an american bank, and I think this whole lets talk policy is too much information
