Simple. The guy is a crook who has been chucked out of the government multiple times already. Then got shipped off to the Eu gravy train for a while to sell us down the river. Now Gordon Brown thinks he's been away long enough for the voters to have forgotten what a corrupt piece of cr@p the guy is, so he's invited him back to steal a bit more of our taxes and assist in the Labour party committing suicide at next general election. Don't expect him to be around for too long, he'll get caught with his hand in the cookie jar again no doubt.

He had a very easy consituency seat where he did very little certainly was only sent here because it was a safe seat and apart from get the place filled with armed coppers when Northern Ireland Secretary did nothing then buggered off as soon as he could.

Was a very instrumental background politician in Bliars leadership challenge.

Got 2 cabinet posts at different times and was pushed out both times.

Got a job in the EU because he obviously knows some intimate labour secrets and is now being pulled in because they are desparate to spin themselves out of a hole.

yes

Has serious trouble with mortgage application forms, and likes to get busy with passport applications from wealthy ethnics.

yes

Nu labia are desperate.

Rumour has it he insisted on a Brazilian before taking up the post but was disappointed when he found out that Gordon had booked him into a salon.

Mandy was a big spin man and instrumental in the New Labour rise to power in the 90s.

He's a Blairite and went against Brown a while back, he twice resigned, once for taking an unclaimed interest free loan from a mate and the second time was a dodgy passport issue.

He ended up in an Eu job because he was still well regarded, where he has had some big fights with the Frenchies, I think Brown has grudgingly admired the job he has done there.

Now that the wheels have come of the Labour machine it's time to try anything.

Next Tony Blair I expect.

Gordon is thinking of the short term. To be able to fight the next election, he needs to stay at the top. A lot of the nu-labour party and the cabinet want him out well before to give the new candidate plenty of time to prep themselves to take on DC. This is a pure act of desperation to fill his cabinet with Nu-Labour to stave off a revolt. I think even more telling is the addition of Ed Milliband to keep his brother off of Gordon's back.

it's perhaps indicative of how scared GB is - having Mandelson back in the fold, when they are well known to not see eye to eye.

I've met Mandelson a couple of times (years ago, before new Labour got into power) and I can understand why he is such a good politician(*). If he engages you in conversation he makes you feel like you are valued and listened too, and appears to be taking it all in. How he acts in the big picture is completely at odds with the individual persona though.

He also has a longer Labour pedigree than most of New Labour - his grandfather was Herbert Morrison, once deputy prime minister.

(*for the record, when I say "good politician", you must imagine it being said in the same tone of voice usually reserved for something unpleasant that you find on your show after a walk in the country).

I'm sure the temptation for him to to burst into " I will survive" in a high pitched voice, was huge. After the dust settles the only things that will be left are cockroches, Keith Richard and Mandy

Prince of Darkness. rofl

How Labour think it's OK to have an unelected crook in Cabinet is beyond me.

It's over for them. Their integrity in tatters.

Call a G.E. NOW!

As sure as night follows day he will stab Brown in the back and then get implicated in some massive scandal.

As Mandy leaves the EU for the UK so Gordo does a poor impression of a statesman and heads off to Paris. Still, beats the crap out of staying here to feel a knife between the shoulder blades.

Mandy is the Prince of Spin, he did a spectacular job of selling Blair to the masses and Brown hopes he can do the same for him. Astonishingly obvious and shamelessly desperate. I can't imagine this impressing his Party either

Maybe it's Brown's final revenge, and he wants to take Mandelson down with him.
