They do look suspiciously like a set of artificial hips.

Have you seen your ladywife moving yet today?
I would go and check her bedroom, if I were you.

Those are the inlet valves.
Depending on your machine, either the Red or blue pipe will attach to the RH side of that pic and connect to the house water system

The machine operates those 2 valves to allow water in when required,

Would be surprised if it was leaking - more usual problem is solenoid failure. Are you sure it isn't one of the hose connections which is leaking? Probably quite expensive for what you get so you want to be sure you are curing the leak and not just junking a perfectly good bit of kit.

..and that microfibre cloth - oh dear! hehe

Microfibre cloth?? Its a bath towel !! tongue out

Yeah its definately leaking. I tried to bodge it with some clear silicon sealent last weekend, spotted water creeping out from under the machine again this morning. If you look at the first pic, you have the thread which the water pipe attaches to, then another set of threads to the left of those. It was leaking from that threaded part.

Took it apart again and I could see where the water had worked its way past the sealent.

Strange design, does the right hand part unscrew from the main body? What sort of seal is there at the join? It would seem that this is a very simple joint that has failed and not the more expensive solenoid valves.

Yeah I thought the design was odd too, I tried to unscrew it but it wouldnt budge. From what I can make out there is no visible seal at the join either.

Please endure you unplug the washing machine before working on it. I know it is obvious but a neighbour of our childminder was killed the other week repairing the washing machine when he hadn't unplugged it.

Or turn it upside down - Dad did a few years ago to get to the waste water pump and....Well, you can guess the rest.

Was I correct in understanding that this was the seal/joint that was leaking, though?

The extreme right hand part is a sort of adaptor or extension thingy. The standard configuration is not to have that bit at all, the end of the intermediate threads is exposed and pokes out the back of the machine to screw the hose to. For some reason on this fitment they haven't done that, they've mounted it an inch or two further inside the machine and screwed that extra bit on where the hose would normally go to fill in the gap and provide the hose connection.

The extreme right hand part does unscrew from the other bit but it's entirely possible that the threads have thoroughly frozen so it appears not to.

There may be an O-ring inside the joint to provide a seal.

Yes
In that case I would try to understand how the joint unscrews, take it apart and see how it was supposed to seal. You don't have much to lose - you'll be throwing the part away anyway if you can't fix it.

Yeah thats a good point, I'll give it another go once the part has arrived, if I can take it apart and reseal it properly then I can just send the new part back.

Oh and yeah, I have been unplugging the machine before working on it smile
