Does anyone know how to activate the launch control on a Ferrari 430 ? I assume it's in race model but just curious of the actual process.

Thanks

Press the LC button?

To be honest I'm much too scared to even consider it.
Every time I get in I see that little button laughing at me, daring me to press it, goading me into another dimension, but I never give in.

Let me know what happens when you eventually do it.

I used it once, and all that happened was lots of smoke from the wheels, depending on surface you need to get the revs right otherwise its worse than a normal launch!

From memory it was DSC Off, left foot on brake, press LC button, build revs to desired level and then let go of the brake and accelerate as normal, changing gears as normal. (with all the excitment I forgot to change into second, so was pretty useless launch anyway!)

Check the warranty terms before using the LC. On the E46 BMW M3 if you use LC more than 15 times your warranty is voided! Incidentally, in the USA such a condition isn't allowed, so the US spec E46 M3s are unleashed by the LC at a much lower RPM than the Euro spec cars. What all of that says to me is that it isn't yet possible to build a car to operate reliably when the LC is used regularly, so it might be worth avoiding it altogether unless you have very deep pockets.

My local Ferrari dealer advised me that the LC will give you 2 goes to a clutch.............. ouch!
I will not be using this on my CS.

I have heard many reports that the launch control fries the clutch VERY quickly. Personally like my clutch more than the pleasure of some launch control starts!!!

The 430 owners manual tells you what to do. I havent used it, as its a bit daft to do so at the traffic lights. Most dealers pluck a completely random statistic out of the air "2 goes and its a gonner" etc, but they dont really know.

When I next find out that I'll be iminently needing a new clutch, then I'll probably take it to a track and give it a go just for the bragging rights! biggrin

The 430 in the states doesnt have the LC button at all. Not allowed. Not sure why you think its "not reliable". Its perfectly reliable as it does what its supposed to, but nowhere does it say that its supposed to respect your clutch in the process. Its like saying that the engine isnt reliable as it keeps eating up all the fuel.

Yes I read the post on your LC experience......... One of the few people that will ever have used this on a CS.
I expect the Stig, Clarkson etc will have used it when they tested the car for TG.

I know it's not in the same balpark, or even game! but there is a 'secret' sports start on smart cars, and the dealer always said to us not to use it because it'll burn the clutch out in 2 uses.
I lost count of how many times we used the start on the same clutch, it was well into double figures.

I suspect the 'limit' is expressed to stop the over-enthusiastic owners using it all the time, then complaining at unacceptable clutch life.

Have you seen the amount of clutch smoke from a car taking off using LC? it is not suprising it toasts the clutch in a couple of goes.
I have seen this on youtube.

fair enough.
I'm sure when top gear (and the likes) had the car they wouldn't have stuck to 2 starts though!

No offence but this was actually an urban myth. I bought an M3 and at the time this 'fact' was all over the forums. I rang the head office of BMW UK (this is 5 years ago so I'm hazy on the minutia) and spoke to one of the top guys who told me categorically that it wasn't true. If you fried the clutch doing LC's for hours on end obviously they wouldn't be overly cooperative but there was never any specific number or timescale involved. He told me to just enjoy the car and not worry about it.

As it happened I only ever tried it twice (the first time I completely fooked it up!) and it wasn't anything to get excited about.
