Bought some Mothers Top Coat earlier in the week and today was the first chance to use it on the cars. So after cleaning, polishing, waxing and coating I was in the mood to tackle the housework

That got me thinking, can car cleaning products substitute the normal ones around the house?

First I tried Autoglym's Car Glass polish on a mirror. Not so good, it dried rock solid and needed detailer to take it off.

Bilt Hamber's water based Surfex degreaser is better at cleaning the oven than Mr Muscle, doesnt stink the house out and can be used without needing to wear uranium handling thickness gloves. And their Auto Balm brings a nice shine to the sink.

Rainex is quite good for finishing the kitchen windows outside, although Fog X makes everything a mess inside.

Meguiars Clay can smooth out the cheap lounge table, and works well on laminate flooring. Best with detailer, but OK with water.

Auto Glym's Interior Shampoo was better on cleaning up a rug than 1001, which had made the bit around the dirt lighter in colour.

Autoglym's Bumper Care made light work of the rubber doormat, and again, Interior Shampoo on the material itself.

Air fresheners were much of a muchness really.

Anyone else like to add their bored-as-I-am cleaning discoveries?

Great topic, you must be seriously bored :-) . Is RainX and FogX actually the same stuff? It smells the same certainly. I remeber a few years ago there was an outcry that miraclegrow flower feed (or whatever) was the same a Miraclegrow hanging basket feed, just repackaged to encourage you to have both.

I put Gtechniq G1 on our shower screen and it's superb. I had mixed results on the car but it's so hydrophobic that water just doesn't stick at all.

Thought about waxing the bathroom tiles too.

I've used rainX on the outside of the house windows and the shower screen for years. Also, carnauba wax on the tiles in the shower means you never have to scrub them, just rinse (particularly good if you're in a hard water area) thumbup

Same here, i've tried it, and i've used a wax on the screen too, that was equally impressive.

Autoglym glass polish on windows is superb.

Apparently if you wax the grout it stays clean longer. I imagine it'd make your tiles easier to keep clean too.

Of course. Washing up liquid in the bucket of water to wash it with. Washing up liquid in the screenwash too, it's much better than that st smeary expensive blue stuff.

If Tesco Shower Sparkle is effective on your shower cubicle, why not on your car's glass too?

It was more Pigeon's comment of using washing up liquid to clean the car which, I am completely assuming, was a joke.

I know but why not use household glass cleaner? Makes more sense economically (assuming it works) than using Rainex on your shower.
