What currency is 'safe'?

If you had some spare cash, and wanted to keep it under the mattress for a couple of years, is it worth trading it in for Euro's / Yen/ rupee?

Yen or $ IMO. Bearing in mind how much bad news has already been factored into the $. The Euro and £ look set for a right bumming in both Y and $ terms.

Gold is famously the place in a depression.....but so far the recession has been undermining jewelry demand which is capping prices so far.

Of course physical gold bought in £....that's a nice play on the £ falling against the $ and the natural hedge of gold itself.

Personally I'd be tempted to stick it all in sheep, land and trees.
