Bonnet rod removal
Discussion
My rubber washers have perished causing the bonnet to wobble slightly, causing the drivers side bonnet rod to snap
Only a little bit has snapped off....The broken bit is inside the White plastic bolts.
I've got some washers in stock, but want to remove the bonnet rod & put a new thread on it.
I've got the top engine cover off, but it's quite awkward getting a spanner on the drivers side rod where it meets the centre of the car. Passenger side looks easy enough.
There's a piece of trim at the top that hampers getting to the arm. It's the piece that goes under the bottom of the windscreen seal.
Is there much to removing this ? Looks like the wiper arms have to come off, is that all that's involved ?

Cheers Graham, I'll have a look in the morning. I'd like to think that the rod shouldn't unwind with the nut tightened up, but I'll give it a shot.
My dad's going to turn me one of those plastic bolts in mild steel tomorrow and put a hole & grub screw in to connect to the broken rod.
But if a can get that rod out, it'll give me an option in case the old man, doesn't come up trumps

Thanks Jon.
The bonnet rod screwed off in the end.
My dad's made a metal replacement for that plastic bit with a couple of grub screws in to clamp on to the old rod.
Down side is, it's longer than the plastic one. There's a bracket held on to the car with two holes in, but they're close together, so the longer metal catch wont go through them in situ.
I'm going to remove the bracket, pass the adjustable metal catch through & in theory this should make it a lot better than the original system.
In time, I'll replace those crap aluminium rods for something a bit stronger.

We put the new catch on, but the old catch on the other side no longer lined up with the hole. The car had been holding on one latch, so presumed the long passenger side rod was bent.
My dad straightened it out and I had it lined up nicely, but when the locking mechanism was turned anti clockwise to the unlock position, it stayed unlocked & wouldn't budge.
He'd somehow managed to bend/damage that bit that pivots in the centre of the car.
I gave in & dropped it over to Power last night
My dad told the guys in the tool shop that it was from a car bonnet, but when they looked at the aluminiumrod hollow tube & plastic catch off the end, they asked "is it from a kids toy ?"
They're going to do me some solid bar & metal catches for it

Russ you can align the rods with the bonnet holes by loosening the two bolts and moving the plate fore and aft. This guides the rod so the rod moves with it. Bending the rods won't have much effect since they pass through the hole in the plate which defines their position. I'm sure you know that but what the hell
