Ok - so after umpteen threads on here about which areas of London and the SE to live in -

what about Hull....

I am considering applying for a job there - I've never been - is it as bad as rumour suggests?

Obviously all places have st areas - does Hull have nice ones?

Many thanks

There are nice areas around Hull. It's bloody cold though and everyone talks weird.

with respect, youve probably come to the wrong place. try posting on the regional thread further down on the main gassing page, you might have better luck.

The best thing about Hull is the ferries to Holland and the M62 out of it.

Its not wholly bad more a typically depressed northern town. You could probably commute there from somewhere nice like York if you are applying for a decent job there.

Has a high immigrant and student population and to be honest would be a long way down the list of places I would consider relocating to.

Well, a couple of years ago, i ahd a mate who lived in west ella(area near to hessle/ bridge) and he was happy living there. however, i also had a mate who lives in hedon, and tbh its not such a nice arae. you will always get iffy areas as you say, but i urge caution, if you do move there, check carefully the area you opt to move to, and be very carefull round the city centre at night, it can be a bit.........lively! p.s. im not sgging hull off by any way!

i lived in Hull for 4 years. Pick your living area wisely, the further away fro the town centre the better, it is however cheap, fking cheap, buying a house for £25? you can do that in Hull - slightly flood damaged mind. A wise friend of mine once said, Hull has a population of 250k, and yet he could not work out what they all do.... rob n thieve and claim benefits mostly, Hull benefits from Europe's largest council estate.

However it is cheap, nightlife is goos, if you are single i suggest getting a house share with some other professional types and enjoying Hull's night life.. The students are easy, the locals even easier. Beer is cheap, as is alcohol generally, so is petrol.

It has white phone boxes, 5p all day phone calls, which is cheap. rented accommodation is cheap. Buses are cheap, it has the highest proportion of low mileage second hand cars, but they are cheap. People in Hull don't go anywhere except Hull, apart from Brid on a bank holiday. It has Pepe's the blue lamp club, de ja vu at the room, it is easy to get in a fight, everybody is realted to everyone else, it has a bronze statue in the old town that the designer forgot to put one small detail on... he promptly killed himself. Hull boasts the humber bridge, possilby still the worlds largest single span suspension bridge. Hull has a higher than average suicide rate. The two last facts may be related.

It is cheap, schools are terrible mind, aspirations are low, superkings are cheap

overall it is a great place to live, if you are young free and single and want an 'edge' to your life

go for it.

did i say it was cheap?

There are some lovely villages a few miles outside of Hull. The place itself should be named Hell...

I dont think it is that bad actually, the worse bits are no worse than the worse bits of any other city. Just fewer nice bits to make up for it.

On the other hand there are plenty of very nice towns and villages within short driving distance. It is also surrounded by the sort of driving roads a Londoner can only dream of, that is to say they are very good!

Lets hope they have a few bombs left over and do Leeds and Bradford while they are up there.

It's just like any other city in the UK, has nice areas, not so nice areas, a quaint pub bit (the old town) and a more lively highstreet pub bit (beverley road and parts of the town centre).

Some decent shopping arcades and some great roads for hoons when you head out of town (barring the York road as they've camera'd it to hell and back) and a close by "out of town" shopping area (the name of which escapes me now).

Yes there's a few immigrants, and yes it is a studenty town as a lot of income is generated by the uni, but go for a weekend and see if you could picture yourself living there. At the end of the day everyone's opinions will differ.

Also, there's decent transport links too, HullTrains do a direct service to London Kings Cross, it's not a million miles away from the East Coast main line for services north to Newcastle/Edinburgh etc, the M62 is 30 mins drive and the A1 not much more, plus a ferry link to Amsterdam/Rotterdam etc.

The only bit that got to me was the fact that the Humber was brown, but that's just a byproduct of industrialisation. Makes romantic walks on the riverbanks a bit smelly though, but it's certainly not as bad as most people make it out to be. I can think of FAR worse places to live than Hull.
