Less than a week with the VXR and I've got warning lights
Discussion
Well what I felt as a small grumble on idle and Raggy Man thought to be avery slight misfire has now turned out to be a reoccuring issue. It sets off the "der der der der" warning "check engine" message upon startup, after a 17 mile journey from Harrogate to Leeds I can smell burning oil whilst driving and once stopped.
I've left a voicemail with the garage (Blaydon) and I'm waiting to see what they come back with.
Not a good start regards to VXR ownership.
Anyone else had any similar issues? I think maybe the service that was given to the car before purchase has knocked something, maybe a badly fitting oil filter, dislodged lead, however seeing as it's burning oil and the smell is coming from the rear of the vehicle, but I can also smell when driving seems a little more serious to me.
Wish me luck for tomorrow

Well the mis fire could be anything, try checking all the HT leads and making sure they are tight on the spark plugs.
And as for the burning smell, it could be a leak from the oil filter or like mine it was the rear diff oil seal leaking and spraying a small amount of oil onto the exhaust. So have a look under there.
I wouldnt bother to much about the engine check light lol it says hi to me every now and then and goes off for a few months then comes back when i feels like it.
And my mate's Ro is the same as mine.
The other thing you mine come across is your fuel gauge not showing full when it full to the top

Good luck mate. Looks like your gonna need it
well I've called Blaydon vauxhall and they've pointed me towards the local VXR dealership in Darlington.
Got the car booked in in Darlington VXR for a full health check, engine check and diagnostic as to why it's running lumpy on idle, smelling of burning oil and generally not being happy.
I will ask for the car to be looked at by Mike Brown as his name has been recommended to me.
Roll on Thursday morning, I'm being given a courtesy car, how much you betting it's a 1.0l corsa?
I'm hoping it's something external like a dodgy lead (for the idle issue) and either a blown gasket on the sump or diff, causig oil to leak onto the exhaust as apposed to an internal issue like a blown ring or other internal hicccup.
Grrr Nowt gans right does it.
Ciao

Hope you get it all sorted.
If you’re getting it done under warranty and it going to take a week or so for them to sort it out. Call Vauxhall Customer services and ask them for a better car. They hired a Vectra for me which I had for 2 months lol
I bet it want be anything to major anyway.

mine does the check engine thing had you hit the bleeps when cold or when coming onto the redline?

I haven't had the car over 3,000rpm since I bought it, although I have a collection of stupid cars I tend to drive like a right lemon! Being a skin head geordie attracts enough attention when in anyting other than a chaved up Nova, so I just tend to 'pootle' around.
Haven't hid the rec limiter once since I bought the car, let alone when cold.
I'm sure it will all get resolved. Just glad for it being within warranty still.
Could someone confirm for me that the Monaro VXR has a hydraulic clutch?
If so I think I may have self diagnosed my burning oil smell? I always had a hint (by use of my nose) that the oil was not normal engine oil, it was always more bitter, more pungent. Sitting on the A1 driving from Newcastle to Leeds or Harrogate at 68mph in 6th with cruise on and I had never smelt a thing. However sitting in nigh on stationary traffic on the way in and out of Leeds has allowed me to carry out some tests .....
Sitting still and pumping the clutch pedal whilst out of gear allows the smell of the burrning oil to grow greatly, leading me to think that if the VXR does indeed have a hydraulic clutch then it must be leaking/weeping onto the exhaust and burning off, hence the smell.
This would also explain why I find it impossible to put it into 1st and now 2nd gear sometimes without going into neutral and then engaging the gear again after pumping the pedal.
Fingers crossed.
I'm going to write a little letter and leave it on the drivers seat for whoever checks the car tomorrow, making them aware of the issues.
I'm sure they should be able to diagnose and resolve the problem quickly.

It can't leak for long! There is only a very small amount of fluid in the system.

Cheers for the heads up, it only has to make it from Harrogate to the A1 then it's in 6th gear all the way to my front door.
I'm sure I'll make it, if not it's AA time to the dealership
I'm just curious as to WHY it's just gone after doing 16,000 miles. Some part of me thinks the 'service' the original dealership carried out the day of purchase may be responsible for BOTH my issues.
The smell of burning clutch fluid ... broken pipe during investigatory work?
Rough idle .... badly fitted lead or plug after investigatory work?
thanks Monkfish, much appreciated.

For the check engine and bells warning.....I had this for ages (months and months)and after £££££'s spent on diagnosis (incorrect I might add) it was traced by Ringram (Richard you're a star) to a dodgy connection on the throttle....It's a really slack connection at the front so take yours off, give a blow and stick it back on...You may get a pleasant surprise!

I will mention this to Mike at the dealership tomorrow, thanks for the info.
I do love forums, so many people with similar experiences. It does appear as though this forum is void of a certain type of person, who do nothing but slag, abuse and generally act like fools. Although they do bring some form of entertainment to debates I much prefer this 'ass badger' free zone.
