insurance question
Discussion
Hi
Just need to clear up an argument with a friend and hoping you can give me your advice.
Both myself and my friend have comprehensive insurance for our own vehicles with no named drivers. The insurance company told me that if i was to drive my friends car then i would be insured 3rd party only and vica versa but would it be legal to drive my friends car without being a named driver? and also who would have to pay up if i were to have an accident whilst driving their car? I take it this would work for either of us.
Thanks for any input

I'm with Muncher on this one - A comprehensive policy usually includes 3rd pary risks when you driving someone else's car (with their persmission).
However your insurance policy wont cover you for any damage that your mate does to your car even if he has your permission to drive it - your mate would need to be a named driver on your policy before your insurnance would cough up for any danmage.

just goes to show.....ask churchill a question and the dumb dog doesnt give you the right answer!!
there con any way got a qoute for my gte once frome em the idots qouted 3500.
i dont even pay 500 for it.
the muped still keep sending daft qoutes every year.
the carp about the other car needing its own insharance is crap too.
and before any one pips up with you can leav the car parke on a road unless its got is own insharace is all so crap.
when ever you leav it the 3rd party liabilitiy is cover by the last driver cover.

I'm feeling thick today. What's DOC cover please?
Cover which allows you to drive any other vehicle not owned by yourself using an extension of third party cover provided by your policy.
Only some comprehensive policies offer this.
The only requirement is that the vehicle is not owned by yourself. The cover extends for as long as you were the last person to drive the vehicle.
In the event of an accident the claim is on your insurance, hence no one else needs a policy on that vehicle.
I had problems with this. I'm insured to drive other cars as a third party driver. If the other car isn't insured already then when I park it on the road and leave it it becomes uninsured on the highway. So I could drive it but not park it. Ludicrous and taxing it was a hoot as well!!
They all want a big slice of your wedge, DVLA want tax on as many vehicles as possible and the post office and insurance companies are just the same. They also want all the paper records to match up, smacks of more big brother to me and it's getting worse.

Guys you're both wrong.
It does not need another policy, think about it, why would it need another policy? If you hit someone, it's covered by you, why would it need another policy?
If you parked the vehicle outside a shop and while you were away the handrbrake failed and it rolled down a hill and hit someone, it would still be insured TPO. Whilst you were the last driver it remains under your cover until someone else drives it.

I think munchers right here, the third party cover applies as long as you are responsible for the vehical and as long as you have permission to drive it from the registered keeper.
With regards to DOC it is dependant on the insurance company some will specify that the vehical must be insured by the owner for road risks (ie min TPO cover)and some may not, you really need to get the insurance company to specify this in a letter if there is any doubt before you drive the other guys car.
And to confuse matters even more some insurance companies will only alow TPO cover for the named driver and not for anyone else even if they carry DOC cover!

Hi Muncher, I had the use of a spare uninsured vehicle and asked the BiB about the insurance situation when it was left parked by me. They said I would be committing an offence. Seems very unfair to me so I ended up taxing both vehicles and getting extra insurance to use them. It's a scam as far as I'm concerned. I can only drive one car at a time. When I tried to tax the other car (wife's) using my policy stating that I had TPC as required by the RTA I was told I would have to have a specific policy for her car or register it in my name. They and dvlc were adamant and an absolute pain.

They've advised you wrongly then. I am 100% on it being parked up issue, you are "the driver of the vehicle" until such time as someone else drives it.
Until very recently I worked for AXA Insurance in motor claims, I could also back that point up by many other insurance professionals.

sorry to be a pain but this thread is getting confusing now. Can i just confirm that it is LEGAL to drive my friends car with their permission so long as we are both insured? And like i said - if the worst happens then i will be covered?
Either you must have DOC cover (check with your insurer if in doubt)
OR
You must be a named driver on your m8s policy.

So, if what you say is correct, you could go out and buy a banger with a new tax disc and MOT, register it in the girlfirends name and not insure it for the year? Sounds too easy, I would have thought they would have seen through that one.
