Barclays seems to be weathering the storm a little better than others. The wisdom of buying shares at this point has been debated by many, but I have a more specific query to chew on.

I am considering buying an amount of shares in Barclays in about 2 months. That way, the market may have gotten closer to the bottom.

In any event, it doesn't really matter when I buy over this year I think. I am thinking long term.

Would you agree that if you held onto enough Barclays stock, bought in the coming months for another 5 years you would see some serious appreciation?

I completely expect and am prepared for the stocks to both lose and gain value over the next year or so.

Buy after the bottom has been clearly defined, not before or just after. You'll miss the innitial upside but gain greater security etc...

Remember the bottom of the market will having nothing whatsoever to do with common sense, values, earnings or anything else.

For what it's worth (probably not a lot, honestly) I'd probably be looking to buy in small around here, but only with money that you can afford to lose. Given the daily volatility, trading with stops isn't exactly ideal at the moment, so you're probably putting the position on for a couple of years with no stop and prices could go to zero (I don't think they will, but they could)

ETA:

Horse_Apple's advice isn't bad either, just a bit tricky to get right.

Or he is 'buying' the shares, so really it doesn't matter about stops?

But I suppose trading with no stop and no take profit is the same actually owning a paper share..
