6 year old son being taught about the holocaust
Discussion
Hi all, interested in your opinions..
I'm all for lets never forget etc but when i saw a book my 6 year old son was being taught from and had been told to study on WW2 and inside there were images of dead bodies & storied of how horrific tortures and tests were being done then i thought it was a bit much to be honest.
interested in what you think? its parent evening on thursday and i'll meet his new teacher so wondering wheteher to bring it up. It's likely that I will because I dont feel its appropriate.

Difficult one that. I agree that it should be taught, people should not forget what happened. To be honest, I don't there's a nice way of explaing the holocaust, the awful pictures are probably needed to show that this was real. Just because it happened 60 years ago (that's an eternity for a child) doesn't mean it's not real.

She's doing 'big red ball, big round ball' etc, if she came home in a year or so with a book about the holocaust I think I'd be mortified.
Let children have their childhood for gods sake.

Ah, the continuing saga of the Jews being victims and ramming it down everyones throats, milking it for all it's worth. (Just my opinion, and many Jews as well for that matter)
A bit harsh, no?The Holocaust is a very important event, IMO - and one which should certainly be taught in history lessons. I agree that 6 is very young (I'm not sure I'd have understood at all, and it's a very deep and subtle subject) but I think the rise of Nazism, the demise of the rule of law and the ghastly consequences are salutary lessons which bear repeating to people who grow up in apparent security and peace... As an aside, you can trace a lot of the current problems in the Middle East back to the Holocaust, too - or to its immediate social and geo-political consequences, anyway.
