Tom Utley writing in todays DT recounts two incidents involving his family.

His wife was detained by two officers for 20 minutes (that's 40 man minutes of police time) because she had not been wearing here seat-belt. She was not charged.

His son (among others) missed his train when West Norwood railway station was invaded by 20 officers and police dogs - one of who appears not to have been able to distinguish betwen cat and coke leading to Tom's son being frisked (nothing found). This was part of - wait for it - an "ongoing community reassurance operation" that according to a press officer at Lambeth Police station had netted the sum total of zero criminals.

Good to see our tax money being so well spent. Mind you, that was 20 officers whose time on this operation was probably paid for by speeding fines ... so that's all right then!
