Would would you place above Bose etc? Just don't want to spend £6-8k on a system and it's rubbish.

I personally cant stand Bose, so yes.

But if you want to actually spend that sort of money then you dont really need to be on the internet. Go to a shop and listen to some kit!

I'd put them above Bose.

But at that price range I'd be looking at Linn or Naim.

Never liked it much myself. Bit shouty. Go and compare it to other stuff; it's all down to personal preference.

Having grown up in Huntingdon - the home of Mission and Cyrus - there was plenty of systems around that came out of the back of the factory - great quality, cheaper than Linn, etc. Put together by vagabonds...

WAY WAY better than Bose (sorry Bose owners!)

Seriously, you need to critically listen to a Cyrus system and a Bose system. Again, with respect to Bose owners, a Bose system is generally considered to be a 'lifestyle' system but Cyrus is serious hifi. I've been a Cyrus owner for 8 years now and love it.

If you are going to spend 6-8k then you'll be able to get the very best of the range. What speakers are you considering, some speakers don't sound so great with Cyrus (just like any brand) but often Spendor & Dynaudio tend to be the ones to go for. I've chosen Dynaudio for mine.

What setup are you interested in? Happy to advise you further if you like or alternatively if you'd like a lot of advice then you ought to check out Cyrus Unofficial

Edited to add, are you after a stereo system or surround sound?

I love and loathe audiophile debates. How good is your hearing and CD collection compared to your wallet? Personally I'm happy with Yamaha, for all things including bikes.

Yes. bang for buck, absolutely brilliant, I own 2* cyrus2 amps preamps owned since 1987, also have a cyrus cd player and fm radio running through a pair of extremely rare mission 782 speakers which are tops.
Its all about pure tone not much bass or treble no controls to faff about with, can be bought really cheaply, better than any mass produced stuff.
Class kit, assuming that the capacitors are okay.

Edited to add
Mission 782's old style not the later types.
http://www.lark-bg.com/sp/mission782.html in black, actually i'd like another pair.

I'm trying my best to keep a balanced view here, it would be great for you to make up your own mind by listening to each system... but... +1 smile

Make an appointment with a quality local audio specialist. Tell them you are serious about buying and explain that you would like to take your time and use their experience to get a system you are totally happy with.

Take a load of your favorite music with you and ask them to start with a £1.5k/£2k system. Ask them to change/upgrade components and keep going until you stop noticing worthwhile improvements.

I'm pretty sure you will leave with something you are delighted with for a lot less than your budget.

I doubt you'd notice any difference between a decent Rotel amp and a £severalK one. Maybe I need new ears?

That sounds like a plan. I've just had mates banging on in my ear about different brands.....
