Hey guys,

I passed a very nice 2006 Jag XKR this morning, as I am in need of a 2+2 (rear seat need to hold my 9month old) I was looking at alternatives to the 997 C2S to replace my Lotus and thought of the XKR.

They seem to be the same kinda price as a used 997 C2S and RS4 but more exclusive. I do like the look of the spec on this one if only it wasn't red.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/578328.htm

Does anyone know much about them:

How are they compared to the 997?

Are there things to look out for when buying second hand apart from the usual?

Are there any major issues problems to look out for when buying used???

What are running costs like, e.i service etc?

How to they handle I love the pin point accuracy of the Elise, how will it compare, will a 911 be better?

I better get booking test drives!!!!

thanks

Bing

Can't answer any of your questions...other than they look absolutely gorgeous. And I wouldn't say no.

There are only a few thousand RS4s in the country, in a few years I'm sure there will be many more XKs...

Anyway, the XK is more of a GT than the 997 although the XKR would probably be quicker in a straight line (I think?)...

I've had 2 of the previous generation XKs (an 8 and an R) and loved both of them. My 8 was that red too and you get used to driving in something different to the masses of 'metallic grey' cars out there. biggrin

Test drive a 997, XK and an RS4 and see what suits you best.

They are fab cars. The drive is great and there's plenty of oomph if want it. I would buy one tomorrow if I could, (but then I'm biased towards the mark). Taking one for a test drive would be a good start. More info can be found at www.xkec.co.uk

Isn't that the one the Autocar mag had a long term test car?

Or was it Top Gear mag. Whatever I recognize the plate.

Top Gear i think. Defo worth a drive in all 3 cars to see what suits you best.

If it were my money, I'd buy an XK, I've always loved them ,especially the new shape. But for you, just go out and drive them, I'm sure you'll have a personal preference smile

I've been trying to source one of these that ticks all the boxes for a while now but I have waited and prices are still coming down. I nearly clinched a deal but the seller turned out to be a tt.

XK is the best GT I have ever driven. IMHO red doesn't do it for me, either does the ones with wood inside. The autobox is brilliant, though the CATS suspension doesn't respond instantly, so best to wind the car up into a set of bends rather than sudden sharp inputs. Not a track car at all but on the road it's a cracker. Take a few test drives. You will just love that big long bonnet and silky smooth V8. Its effortless to drive. XKR is insane XK is more than enough though and I found a big difference in insurance quotes between the two.

Try and pick one up with as many toys as possible (though it comes with a lot of kit standard) and the 19" rims give a far better ride than the 20's. Prem 8 speaker sound is nice to.

I have watched an 2007 XKR convertible drop from £56k to £49 in the last few weeks. Recon If he trades at £40 with my car I just might. I know the wife won't mind (I hope).

This car is the Autocar long term test car. The XKR is a terrific car. In my opinion it sits between the likes of the 911 and Merc SL - combining comfy cruiser and serious sports car. It was more or less unique until the Maserati GT came along.
Several things to remember though. The supercharged car is expensive to run. Heftier insurance as has been said and if you drive it 'properly' you'll be lucky to get mpgs starting with a '2'. Our one also got through rear tyres every 10,000 miles or so - but maybe that was the way we drove it. Later cars than this also have a better quality interior - slightly nicer dash top etc.
As for the debate between 19s and 20s. Yes the 20s do affect the ride (especially at low speeds) but not as much as you'd think. In my experience Jags are more immune to this than BMWs, Mercs and Audis. Maybe it's all that testing Jaguar does on British B-roads.

I think they are more GT than sports car, but non the worse for it.

Think more sophisticated muscle car biggrin

I'b be tempted to visit someone like Paramount Performance and get the pulley changed on the blower, along with a cold air induction kit and a nice exhaust.

I think it'd be quite grin inducing, yet sumptuous at the same time.

Paramount have been great with my XK8, in fact they've done most of the mods on it. Very pleased with them.

Hi Bing,

I've had the new XKR since March 2007 so have spent enough time with it now to really get to know it, it's an AMAZING car.

To comments on some of the posts above, get the XKR, there is no question, the XK is great but it really doesn't have enough power, the R fixes that and the ride setup is different between the two, the R handles better.

I got nearly all the options on mine but I would say the must haves are:-

Lux spec interior: It really is much nicer and from MY08 onwards it's standard, not sure if it'll effect resale values but it's definately more desireable. I had a loaner XKR for a little while with standard interior and the difference is noticable. The lux seats are also much better with a lot more adjustment.

Premium Sound: Much better than the standard stereo, again standard from MY08.

20 Inch wheels: No significant difference to the ride over the 19's. Again 20's standard from MY08

Front parking sensors: Rear's are standard but it has a looooong bonnet, I'd be lost without the front parking sensors.

I would say they're the options to have but I also have the Intelligent lights which move as you go round corners, I really like them especially on dark country roads.

In terms of running costs, I've done 23,500 miles in mine so far, my front tyres were replaced at 14,000 miles at a cost of 130quid per tyre and the rears were done at 18,000 miles at a cost of 150quid per tyre. The rear brake pads were also replaced at 14,000 miles which is mainly down to the traction control which uses the rear brakes quite a bit this cost 160 quid. I've had two services, got the first one free and the second was 350 quid. So overall in 18 months of ownership apart from petrol it's cost me 1070 quid, which isn't bad for a 420Bhp car. My company pays for my petrol thankfully biggrin

You really need to compare it with your other options, it's different from a 911, in some aspects it's not as good but in others it's better so you need to decide which aspects are important to you and decide from there.

Anymore questions just ask.

John.

Amen, J-boy!

I loved mine, I'll be getting another next year, when things settle down abit!!

XKR is a GT, 997S will always be a Porsche, thats it. In an XKR you can cruise, thrash or pose depending on your mood.

Facelift and new engines next year, will get those prices down a bit more. I myself will be looking for one of those XKR launch spec cars. They come with all the toys, just choose the colour.

I am in a similar position to the O.P. mind was set on a XKR but no matter how I look at it I think that getting a child in out would become very tiresome maybe also very difficult. Dealer responses on this subject have ranged from "I wouldn't bother mate buy a XF instead, to "we have a list of child seats that fit the car but nearly all involve having the passenger seat a good way forward".
Still left in little doubt that with some R's around the 40 k mark for a year old example there is little else out there that can compete with it on almost every level.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, I like the look of this one:-

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/692630.htm

Does anyone know if that year still has that silly telescopic aerial, when did they stop using it. I am kinda short so my seat is usually fairly forward so am hoping that I should be able to get a baby seat in for a 1+ without major issues.....

PS what is the Sport Lux pack, I have seen one at Hatfield Jag with that pack, does it have the Ali trim over the veneer, at 33 I'm not ready for Veneer yet. wink

thanks all.....

Hi Bing,

Yeah that one will still have the telescopic aerial, from MY08(around July 07) they removed it in favour of the integrated one, from various reports the radio reception isn't as good though, I originally didn't like the aeriel but it doesn't really bother me anymore, you get used to it biggrin That's a lot of car for the money.

I'm presuming the sport Lux pack is the Lux interior but not sure if that's a new option, do you have a link to the Hatfield one and I'll take a look.

John.

Unfortunately an 08 car is out of budget for me.... I guess I can live with it.

The lux sport pack, means it has the luxury full leather interior. This gives you 16 way, very comfy power seats in lieu of 10 way. All the seats are higher quality leather and so is the dash/doors. The aliminium weave on the dash is 'standard' unless you request otherwise, so a lux sport interior can come with either, but usually with the ali as the wood doesn't work in the car IMHO.

That car at the Aston dealership has me interested!

For what it is worth you will not beable to get anyone comfortably in the front of the car with a child seat in the rear, the out going XKR is better for this. Buy the XF SV8, but these are still 50K!

Bing, if you're interested, this month's Jaguar World magazine just happens to have a pretty thorough XK buyers guide. Might be worth a trip to your local papershop!smile
