I recently drove through France, Switzerland and Italy with some mates, and bought the latest European maps from Tom Tom, plus updated the software on my One V2. Unfortunately it kept getting 'lost' - thinking it was in the middle of some random field when I was actually on an established major road. I managed to get some shots as evidence, and sent an email to Tom Tom over 2 weeks ago. And I've still heard no reply. I told them I was disappointed and wanted a full refund of the maps (£60) in return for me deleting them. I also told them how well my friends Garmin performed throughout, so we ended up following him.

Am I right to be upset at this? It's not the best thing having Tom Tom tell me to "turn around where possible" while halfway down a motorway or dual-carriageway!

Ah, they emailed an old account of mine... still bloody useless though!

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support

The maps of Italy and Switzerland are covered to the same percentage as the UK maps are. Infact, those 2 countries are 2 of TomTom's biggest markets in Europe. There will be cases where you will find errors in all of our maps but not to the degree that you have mentioned in your email. It sounds to me like you were having some sort of GPS fix issue which was causing the issue which can be resolved by updating the software on your device with TomTom Home.

Also, it may be worth noting that when you purchase maps either through Home or on our website, you must agree to the terms and conditions of the sale prior to completing the order which state that maps are non refundable. There are no exceptions to this rule if the maps have been installed and activated.

With Best Regards, The TomTom Customer Support Team

So I've just responded:

I'm sorry, but that is simply not a good enough response. I performed a full software update from Tom Tom Home (did you check this before advising me?!) and still had all of these problems.

Please explain how on earth I was to know just how poor your maps/software would be prior to installing and activating them? If I had known just how useless your maps/software were going to be do you really think I would have activated them? If this is your final response then your level of customer service is appalling and you have just passed another customer over to Garmin.

C*nts.

On a European trip earlier in May 2008 I found the mapping very accurate - and the software was better than Garmin. What do you think caused the problem??

I had the same problem with my Tom Tom when I was driving down a dual carriageway which bypasses Leighton Buzzard. They were building the road for three years BEFORE I bought the Tom Tom (with the latest map edition at the time) and the road had already been open for year.

And recently, I was driving along Watling Street in Bletchley. Tom Tom wanted me to turn left into a road that has had no access into it for over 8 years!

My Tom Tom worked great last year on a trip that included, Belgium, Germany, France, Poland and the Czech replublic, got us to within sight of our hotels everyday!

Was a bit slow, but it was 1.7Gb of maps, I'd say there is something up with your tom tom to be honest!

Your problems do appear to be greater than what would be deemed acceptable, but it's fair to point out that a 'perfect' sat nav just doesn't exist.

Have just returned from a Euro trip, pretty much visiting the same countries you did. I used a Garmin which worked fine for 99.9% of the time, but it did have the odd moment of trying to send us down some minor back roads that wouldn't be my first choice.

Take them to the small claims court. They won't turn up, as they'll get lost on the way.

Hmm this isnt very good considering tomtom is meant to make the very best satnavs. We used our garmin in Portugal over summer and it worked fantastically well, just like using it in the UK. I think complain until they give you a refund, they need to get the arses into gear.

what version number are your maps? press the mph/eta/sat strength panel on the main screen then the vX.XX button on the overview screen.

No problems that bad with my TomTom One and it's been used in loads of countries in Europe. The only time I have had similar was on a brand new motorway in France that wasn't open when my map was made. Again a similar issue with a road in Kent that has been rebuilt and doesn't follow the exact path of the old one, but again that is something that has occured after the map was bought.

Does the road you're on actually exist on the map? Try browsing the map manually. If it does, I'd guess their is a problem with unit calculating it's position properly.
