Seriously, the second time in a year. I am really careful with who I hand it to and watch it like a hawk. Both times I suspect dodgy garages.

Is it time to start carrying big wodges of cash and forget the plastic?

Most annoying thing is being without a card for the next week and changing all the details on amazon/paypal/etc. etc.

Are you sure it was a garage that did it....?

No, but if you want to buy anything online you have to type in your details don't you? I check for spyware &c if that's what you mean!

Bad luck NCOT. I try to always use the supermarket stations as they tend to employ, shall we say, more suitable characters for the job.
Touch wood, have not had a card cloned yet!

I got a call once "are you Jeff M, are you in your office?" "Definately not in Delaware" "we'll call you back"

Card had been cloned and was used to pay for a meal in Delaware. There had been two small charges less than one $, which alerted the fraud people at Bank of America. They actually caught them.

I had to sign a couple of affidavits for the court case.

I am very careful with my card details, yet mine was cloned a couple of months ago.

The RBS spotted a couple of curious transactions and contacted me.

I tend to use cash for most transactions, especially at dodgy looking petrol stations.

I couldn't care less about bandying my card details about. The few times something has happened (once to the tune of $1500!), it was all resolved with a quick phonecall and a stiff drink. Guys, it's really the safest way to pay.

If you keep your card in view all the time it can't be cloned. It's when the illegal-looking gentleman behind the counter palms your card under the desk that the trouble occurs.

I had my details taken twice in a year, both times (I believe) from an online store database being hacked after I'd bought something. Both times, however, the bank phoned me within a few minutes and asked if I'd made the purchases. I said, What purchases? and my money was refunded.

No, get a few of these:

http://uk.virginmoney.com/prepaid-card/

Keep one for petrol, one for online purchasing, etc, etc.

Simply transfer the amount of money you need for each via online banking when you need to. They can clone away to their hearts desire but without a huge credit limit for them to spend, they are wasting their time. There is no way I would use a proper credit card at a petrol station or online these days.

Not true. There's a new method out where an extra chip is inserted into the machine and it reads some of the customers card details and PINs and sends all the details on. It isn't just dodgy petrol stations and restaurants now either - Asda, Sainsburys and Tescos are all reported to have been affected.

They can read both. All they do is 'intercept' the data as it's being read through the machine. Lots of these devices are hyrid (Mag swipe & Chip) readers in one. So all they do is essentially read the card at the same time that it's being read through the pos.

Thing is though that the chip is much much harder to clone due to all the encryption that's held on the chip. What they usually do is clone the mag swipe part. Cloning a chip is much harder but not impossible if you have the right tools and enough knowledge.

If you're interested the whole lot (including the specs) can be found at:
