Jackie Haggis, 38, saw the attack from her house 15 yards away.

if i believe this:

Among the injured was 20-month-old Amir Santos, who was ripped from his mother's arms.

"I saw the dog with a baby in its mouth. It dragged the baby about 60 yards across the green.

"Men were trying to hit the dog with a fire extinguisher from a bus and with sticks but it wouldn't let go.

"Eventually a man came onto the green in a pickup truck and tried to run the dog over but it didn't succeed.

"It was going absolutely wild."

A bus driver eventually managed to rescue the baby by hitting the dog with a fire extinguisher.

Ms Haggis added: "If the bus driver hadn't come to the baby's rescue, it would have certainly been killed. It was absolutely petrifying."

Then i dont understand how the result for the baby can be this:

The baby was taken to hospital with leg injuries but later discharged.

Toddlers are fragile - surely if the dog was really on the rampage itd be more damaged than so reported?

Surely after both the men and the bus driver had hit the dog with the extinguisher, it would be the extinguisher thet would have been discharged

this pisses me off, because now everyone is going to go on about how only a pitbull would do this and that they are dangerous dogs and are horrible creaters. this annoys me, greatly. everyone is quick to jump to conclusions about pitbulbs given the background that they have. everyone assumes they are vicious dogs that fight, but in reality they are among the least likely to attack you. the problem lies within the owner.

they buy a pitbull for its vicious image, and nothing more, they neglect it, treat it badly, do not train them as they should and then they becaume vicious in defense. in a survey cockers spaniels and pitbulls came in opposite tenth place (one tenth from top, one from bottom) of most likely to bite. which was where may surprise you.

granted this rant is a little off topic, but i hate to see animals put down and steriotyped do to the image they are given by their owners

Was it a true pitbull? If so it'll be destroyed as being unmuzzled in a public place I would assume.

If the dog wanted to do serious damage I'd say there wouldn't be much left of a baby, have you seen what a dog can do to a leg of lamb?

A shame they can't destroy the owner, and re-home the dog.

+1 - I detest this "bad dogs" ste that some people spew. It's not the dog, it's the owner. A bloody labrador would be just as bad, if treated in the same way.

Bring back the ‘dog licence’.

All dogs to be chipped and registered to the owner’s licence.

I agree. Also there should be a dog owner's "driving test" to weed out the people who are too stupid to own dogs.

Maybe it did not inflict much damage because it was a low energy pitbulb...
sorry I will get my coat...

P.S. As the proud owner of three SBTs I fully agree with your sentiments about
the much maligned bull breeds.

Bit late for that. "Armed police supported by a helicopter were ultimately forced to shoot the crazed dog."
