Hello,

I need a car for a 100 mile daily round trip on the motorway. I have been offered a Passat estate with the 2.8 V6 and 4 wheel drive (not needed really but that is what it comes with). The car has FSH, 80k, black leather and is SE trim. From a dealer for 2400 but I think I can get it for 2000 which is closer to Parker's Guide price. It seems like a well sorted car from the photos and I will obviously take it for a test drive some time next week. My question is does anybody have one of these and what are your views? I should mention that I have a fuel budget which means as long as I get near 30 mpg I will break even so I don't require a more expensive diesel model.

Thanks

You should get over 30mpg on the motorway. I have got an A6 Avant with the same engine. Mine is 2WD automatic. I get 27mpg in a mix of driving.

I had a Corrdao VR6 and with reasonable but not slow driving on normal roads I would get around 22-24mpg so I'd guess 29-30 on a run would be achievable.

We've a 1998 Passat 2.8 Syncro - never missed a beat after 220k (and still on original clutch !).
Average about 29/30mpg - daily run from Glastonbury - Newport (110 miles return).

I bought a Passat Syncro back in 2001 and ran it until last year. Excellent car - very refined and relaxing to drive (although not as fast as you might think).

If fuel is not an issue then a Syncro at the right money would be good.

Should easily be able to get one for well under £2K. I sold mine for £1K last year!
