Did anyone watch the programme on YTV last night about the refurbishment of Sir Nigel Gresley at the Gromont Workshops. I couldnt help admire the style and britishness of this wonderful beast, and many comparables to that of Tvr.They were many light years ahead of their time,The engine was a different drive once they reached 70mph and took some holding back.Admired by everyone as a piece of engineering art. A collectable piece of the finest British engineering, both no longer. The comparisons go on.

Yes, but yesterday someone on the MX5 girls' forum said my car was a 'kitcar',
so I no longer feel able to drive it on a public road. cry

The age of steam represents all that was once Great about Britain before we allowed successive governments of cowardly traitorous PC aholes to ru(i)n this nation. Wasn't it a good idea closing thousands of miles of perfectly good railway lines back in the sixties, including branches to factories and warehouses, and moving millions of tons of freight onto our congested roads. rolleyes Let's hope they have more balls when sorting out pipsqueak Iceland this time around. What a clever Chancellor too, eh ? grumpy (hic)

Have you actually read the Beeching Report? I used to think like you do until I read it. He had a very good plan for the railways, and had the Government done the second part of the plan, ie the "spend" part, I think it would have worked. However, all the Government did was carry out the "closure" part and walk away.

The one bit that he missed, and I blame the "Midland" men for this, is that the Great Central was built to the "Berne" loading gauge, and would now be perfect for the central link that the Government are now thinking about, connecting Leeds etc. to the Eurotunnel.

Did I criticise Beeching ?

As you have just pointed out, government interpreted his report and made the decisions.

Sadly down in the South here we got a program all about poetry and the railways.
I'd hope that we'll get a program about the rebuilding of "Sir Lamiel" or something, but AFAIK one hasn't been made.

I'm glad you mentioned about this though. I found the program on the internet, so was able to watch this afternoon!

The by-product of Beeching however, was the saving of Steam, and later the Diesel preservation movement, but I'm not sure he foresaw that.
