Which console to buy?
Discussion
I appreciate that this may have been posted a thousand times before but would appreciate some advice.
Thinking of buying a new console to replace my PS2 before winter sets in with its dark evenings etc.
Like to play first person shooters and strategy games.
Which console does anyone recommend?

ps3, and no monthly payment for online gaming, xboxes after a year die and need sending back under warranty. you get what you pay for an xboxes are cheap now.
Had my xbox for about two years now had no problems. I know a lot of people that have never had problems, the few that have said that it was sorted quickly and easily enough. For online gaming it's about £35-£40 a year and the interface is IMHO better than the ps3's. RJB_666 said:

Can you message/chat to mates when you are in different games etc now?
It used to annoy the hell out of me that you couldn't do that.I had several PS3 owning friends who all suggested they would
rather pay for the PS3 online system if it could be as polished as the LIVE experience.
I sold my PS3 a while ago (I had no need for blu-ray either btw), although I will get another later, it is still a stunning machine and don't let anyone tell you any different. It's just that apart from finishing the Drakes Fortune game, my PS3 pretty much sat here doing very little.I even borrowed a friends machine just so I could play Metal Gear a few weeks back and I only played that for around an hour before the Xbox drew me back.
For me, the PS3 is the better designed console (although there have been numerous deaths with that too) and it probably has a few more tricks up its sleeve, but the 360 was well established before it arrived. This in turn meant more titles for the 360, more people playing, more online friends, a far more polished online syetem etc etc.
Best bet is to ask yourself which games you like the look of, whether you need blu-ray, how often will you play online (and if so, which machines do other people own you may want to play with) and are you happy to have your console probably die after a year or two

What do your mates have?
What games do you like?
Are the games you like exclusive to any console?
I had a 360 but got rid after 2 lots of RROD, then I got a PS3. The interface is much better but the online isn't consistant. Some games like COD4 are identical to the 360 and some like MGS4 need a different account setting up which is a pain. Sony really should have forced the developers to use an integrated platform like the 360 to give the user a persistant user experience. I have noticed that in game voice chat isn't as good with the PS3 as you have to use a BT headset and most people seem to use one they get from a Christmas cracker..... At least the 360 has a wired one as standard and most people seem to use it.
Personally I prefer the PS3 as the hardware feels much more substantial and I think it has more to give in the future than the 360.

I've played all three and in my opinion the xbox is the better machine (so I got one
). The PS3 is to up itself to be taken seriously. The Wii is fun, but not a serious gaming machine. I have the 360 and Wii and wouldn't swap them.
How can an inatimate object be up itself?

The Xbox has more games at this time, but the Sony is a better bet for the future IMO.

Have them all, and had them for a while. It drives me nuts that all the STUFF type mags put the PS3 at the top, because there are F'all games and the whole SONY thing pisses me off. Yep, technically it is top, but as a game machine i'd rather play my PS2.
However, it is a very good DVD/Blue Ray player. I really didn't appreciate how good it was until my top-end Denon DVD died and I used the PS3 to watch a DVD I wanted to see. It is bloody great, make no mistake about it. I was truly shocked. Still a s
t games machine though.

Don't listen to them they have been hypnotized by the 3 red rings.
My xbox went wrong within moments of using it, as did the wireless network adapter and also a disk. The ps3 is a far superior product. The 360 however, has forza, and a far better online playing ability (see "forza2 the alternative championship") So yeah, despite its issues, I prefer it. My ps3 is actually back in its box now, someone at work is offering to buy it, just got to find out how much for.Waiting for someone to bite, obviously.
