The FIA'S recent f1 rulings
Discussion
I've been racking my brains to try and remember where I've seen sports officials acting like this before and I've just remembered. Saturday afternoon wrestling on the telly as a kid.
Can you remember, Giant Haystacks would be in the ring and be just about to win when the referee would conviniently turn his back as one of the baddies stepped in to help his floundering partner. We all used to shout at the telly, the baddie would step back out of the ring just as the ref turned back round. Old ladies would whack the bad guy with their handbags as Giant took the count as was ruled the looser.
We'd all tune in the next week to see a return grudge match where justice prevailed.
F1 has now emulated that farce, probably tempered with a bit of ' celebrity big brother' as they thrown in another unlikely scenario.
Thank god no one's got any big budgets tied up in the "sport".
Way to go FIA.
Henry.

Could someone correct me if i'm wrong, but LH's start penalty, is that the first time in F1's 58 year history that a penalty has been awarded due to a first corner incident? I can't recall this happening before but i have a bad memory. Bumping and banging has happened in the first corner ever since the sport began, but i don't recall any penalties for it.
The Massa/Bourdais penalty is interesting. Apart from Lord Summerisle being bang on the money on the GP thread, it simply hasn't occurred to anybody that it is Bourdais who was being investigated. None of the ITV commentary team thought for a moment that Bourdais was in the wrong, and given that the incident didn't involve Hamilton, i think its fair to say that they are impartial on this one.
You young guys who are new to watching F1, you need to know that all this doleing out of penalties is unprecedented. I stand to be corrected, but i think we may have had more penalties in this season than in the the whole of the history of F1 put together. Yes, we've had penalties before, but nothing like the number being awarded this season.
And the thing is, the FIA are just digging a hole for themselves. You simply cannot legislate against every move every driver might make, and certainly, with 3 different none-racing stewards at every meeting, consistency is totally impossible.
Penalties is all we talk about nowadays with F1, the 'racing', such as it is, is almost a side issue now. And yet, not too long ago, you could go through an entire season with having to discuss the issue of penalties at all.
The biggest story of the season is unquestionably the string of extremely suspicious decisions made by faceless stewards in an obvious attempt to influence the outcome of the championship. The big question is why though - is it another sporting case of 'Asian gambling syndicates'* or is it down to the fact that those making the decisions are appointed by mad Max Mosley. And if it is Max one wonders what it is that made him so opposed to McLaren and whether it has anything to do with his upbringing?
Regardless, the only other question is whether F1 is now so disreputable that the reason nobody has been charged with bringing the sport into disrepute over this is because that is not actually even possible any more... ?

I think if LH had actually made the first corner he'd have been OK. However, he ran right off the track, and gained (at least) one place as a result. I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the penalty, rather than pushing the ferrari wide. Now, i'm a big LH fan, but i totally agree with the penalty in this case. I also agree that Massa's penalty was 100% justified. If you watch the reply, he actually appears to deliberately steer into LH.
What i can't agree with is the penalty for Bourdais. This seems to be just a blatent "let's give Ferrari an extra point" decision. It's a total disgrace.

Sorry i should have guessed, massive rant about the FIA (without any details) - was only going to be about one thing.

Bourdais revieves an unappealable 25 second penalty affter the race (when it could easily have been done during the race) for an incident caused entirely by Massa
Either, the stewards are totally incompetent
Or, they are biased toward Ferrari
Its one or the other

It resulted in Massa being elevated and thus reduces Hamilton's championship lead, so the outcome of the decision has a direct bearing on Hamilton and the Championship. This is why the fact that the verdict was decided against what most people consider to be the innocent party makes it extremely suspicious - IMHO either it was a racing incident or Massa drove into the side of a car that he was attempting to pass. Bourdais was innocent and deserved the points denied him by the hapless Brazilian today.tomTVR said:

Or they deemed Bordais to be in the wrong? Besides they said it would be investigated after the race at the time. Pray tell how he could possibly have been in the wrong?
Massa racing with him for position attempts to pass on the outside, fails to give Bourdais racingroom and chops him (easily avoidable bt only by Massa as Bourdais had nowhere to go), they collide resulting in Massing half spinning. In what world is that Bourdais fault?

Not quite faceless. Remember that Allen Doneley (who evidently hates having his name spelt incorrectly, so Alan Donnally it is) was imposed on the sport as chief steward despite his only connection to our sport being a PR rep for Ferrari and then the FiA.And guess who imposed him on the sport? I'll give you a clue. This totally independant person had a model Ferrari on his desk when interviewd by the BBC.
Allan Doonly is a Mosley man with all that entails.
Now does that explanation make thing clearer for everyone?
The stewards themselves come from countries where an oxcart without a load on it is thought of as a sort car so these chaps have a great difficulty in standing up to Eilleen Doomally as they probably think he knows what he is talking about.
My wife asked me today why I bothered getting up to watch the race. It's not as if I enjoy it anymore as you know, as soon as the cars get close to one another, there will be a stewards enquiry.
The sooner the manufacturers set up their own open-wheeled forumla the better I'll like it. I'll move over without a second thought.
By the way, I don't blame the current Ferrari setup. I blame one man whose morals I find most utterly repulsive.

My gripe is not at the incident but the immidiate whinging about Ferrari bias 3 seconds later. Mark Webber go elevated into the points because of the penatly, do you think maybe these stewards are biased towards Red Bull Renault. Dont see any suggestions of the FIA staff walking around enjoying free leading brand energy drinks do we? How convenient.

Please equate the penalty given to Masa for colliding with Hamilton to the far harsher one issued to Bourdais for an accident caused by Massa
