mirror indicators

Has anybody experiemented with l.e.d's or lights in the wing mirrors?

they are quite small mirrors the lights could possibly overwhelm them.

Saw a Corvette at LeMans last year whilst waiting for the ferry home. He had custom mirrors with 5 LED's built into the mirror lens itself. They are very very discrete and really bright. I have the company name at home and a picture of the mirror. I will post later if you are interested. May also order a pair for myself if you want a bit of a group buy!

As Mart has already said, the ones I have seen and thought were being referred to have the LEDs set behind the glass of the mirror and shine through holes in the silvering of the mirror.

Indicators set in the front and end of the mirror body are featured on a number of production cars but I'm not sure our indicator bodies are thick enough to sink a lens/reflector into so would only be able to fit a line of individual LEDs poking through the body which would look rather naff IMHO.

Yeah guys, although I forgot to say specifically I'd kinda figured you'd guess it was orange indicator lights I was thinking of and not "full-beams" bolted on!

I think it can be done tastefully (like most after-market alterations mooted on here), but whenever you modify the original package there is always an associated risk that others will perceive it looks naff (either because it's not the norm and hence what they are used to, or it's not their cuppa) but how many people thought l.e.d rear lights were naff when they first cam out - now every bug*er wants them.

Given that the Ultima-TE will be orange with black "chrome" I think the small orange l.e.d's in the edge of the mirror casing should blend in with the rest of the colour scheme (appropriate sized lights obviously).

From the responses I assume that nobody else has done it so far so I will think about this a little more before committing myself. We will see.

Without some sort of reflecting/refracting type of lens over the LEDs they will be just as you say 'a line'. I fear they will not be visible during daylight so will only have a function at night. A good test would be to get a strip of surface mount type LEDs and stick that around the mirror body and see if they are visible in daylight. On my Dakar I have some side repeaters that consist of 7 LEDs in a clear plastic housing and you can hardly see them working. If the SVA had not been conducted indoors I think they may have failed.

Phew.....at least not the full bling 'white led's in the glass' job then!
Just on those bling things in the mirror, would a white light shining toward the rear not violate MOT guidelines? (unless they were coupled to the reversing lamps)

Regarding the SVA - I shall be keeping the original indicators on the side, the ones on the mirrors will be just in addition.

thanks s-t, that's the sort of general idea but may have to go down the "one-off" route and get something fabb'ed up

oh, and there wont be any windows for the SVA the "TE" in the Ultima-TE stands for Top Excluded! (or Turbo Engine, must make my mind up!)
