High mileage XJR V8

Would I be insane to even consider this? I've seen a high miles (over 150k)2001 XJR that looks tasty. A lot for 7 years, but I'm hoping these are unstressed motorway miles and it does have FJSH. As far as I know the 2001 car will avoid the tensioner , water pump, nikasil and throttle body issues but what else should I be thinking of. Is this a certain money pit or what? Incredible performance at low money, or will somethig go wrong and reverse these.
Any thoughts would be welcome as I adore these cars but am rather nervous of buying a duffer. Thanks in advance etc.

Check it has had a tensioner replacement done and has the latest fitted. Suspension, shocks, wheel bearings etc. wear as this is a heavy car. They take mileage well so should be no major problems. Service histroy is very important, otherwise just check as if it was any other big luxo barge at big mileage

Good stuff, thanks. Any particular areas to look out for? My heart wants it, badly, but this is my head talking here and the potential for ruin mean it's worth listening to in this case. Currently drive a 2004 MX5 and am used to the total unswerving reliability so don't weant a nail. Having said that, I recall Jags of that era did very well on the Top gear JD POwer survey... ?

It all depends on the price of course but if it has full Jagaur history you can't get better than that. Of course items will wear and tear at that age & mileage and some of them may be dear but it'll still be cheaper than buying and running a new repmobile.
At thet mileage it will badly need a gearbox and diff oil change too.. neither of which are in the service schedule. If I was buying I´d change all the fluids straight away and check it had the metal bodied secondary tensioners fitted as well. See if you can find Broardbean747s post on the V8 XJ on this forum, I don´t know how to do links but it´s well worth trawling through and having a read before you buy Jaguar steve said:

Thanks for the info. I've read the buyer's guide thoroughly and it's a great source of info. I don't think I'll go for it this time, the FJSH is genuine but there's is no evidence of any transmission work or tensioner replacement.
Following a fair bit of research, at 156k I'd be worried even driving it home if the original ones are still in. Will carry on looking I suppose.

As long as the price is lower than a 56k car, infact even then I expect it still has the old tensioners in.
You shouls double the 156 with out have any major problems.
The gearing is high 30mph per 1000revs so I expect that the engine has never been streched, so whats the problem

That's just it - 156k on original tensioners. I'd not be happy until they got changed. As it is, the car is at the top end of the budget so I'm holding fire for now. There's no rush - something will turn up!8Ace said:
