Wondered if anybody on here has ever done any volunteer work abroad ? Like helping out in third world countries to teach english, renovate school buildings or help at a kids hostel, etc.

Must be a worthwhile thing to do.

Yes, I have.

Mainly in France, which was easy for me seen as I'm half French. A large group of my friends went off to Africa to build a school there and every year my Dad leads a team to do similar things in Uganda.
They need our help and it feels good to be able to give it.

I don't mean to sound like a self righteous pillock, but looking at that paragraph, it could sound like it, sorry!

Can I ask what sort of skills they look for and whether you need any professional qualifications ?

I have led a team in the ugandan outback. Our brief was to rehome tribes closer to artesian wells. This was borne out of the countless tv adverts highlighting their plight and the long distances they must travel to seek a palatable source of water. Needless to say they flourished in the france......

I have not received the accolade I expected for my efforts......

Although it was because France was further than expected...........

Good for you, but why can't they build their own schools? We were doing that in 1200AD. Africa - what a rubbish useless country!

I suppose when you can get someone else to do it why bother ??

Why don't we stop building roads and then someone else might come and do it for us ?

Yes, uganda again! (amasingly!) Building schools for aids and malaria orphans near Jinja. With www.softpowereducation.com. Good charity, not silly uk salaries or fancy offices. Pretty much all local emplyees on the ground in Uganda.

I have been looking to do this for a few years, have not got round to it yet. I keep looking at this website (http://www.realgap.co.uk/Volunteer%20Work) so many projects all accross the world.

Think i would like to go on a sports volunteer project, bit different to a normal holiday.

They all get destroyed again so we keep on building then so they destroy them again.

Africa can't keep getting aid as it just doesn't work.

This comes from a guy whose family and friends family has made a lot of money from building infrastructure in st hole countries.

Why go abroad when there are issues closer to home?
