hi all - Im considering buying a 1987 944 (2.5 lux i think).

Only thing that would put me off is that its an automatic. Its a very clean car though with mint leather and a nice enough looking engine bay (clean etc).

Any opinions on the auto version?

Car is going to be an audio competition car and wont be tracked/raced etc.

cheers all

Dont Dont Dont Dont Dont................

The auto is not a popular option, and you will seriously struggle to sell this car later down the line (unless it is seriously cheap) then dont touch it...

you can get a decent 2.5 Lux for aroun 2k - 3k any day of the week

Just make sure it 's nice and cheap as autos are not favoured. Could be a bargain if you are not going to drive it hard. An independent inspection is still advised, just in case anything is lurking that could cost you money to fix. Besides, the inspector usually earns his fee by getting more knocked off the price than the seller would normally concede to. ie they can't argue with an expert so easily.

No I think he should get an auto - afterall he's going to stuff it full of ICE so needs to have a hand free to fiddle with the stereo

I drove a friends 2.5 Lux auto once

The engine had recently been rebuilt so was in top condition. My Metro Gti is faster - need I say more.

When it's loaded up with heavy ICE

HA HA - not filled with ICE in the Kev kind of way. nice set of front speakers, amp, and a single lightweight sub

competition as in quality not quantity

my rover turbo doesnt have much trouble lugging it all around

Space for speakers is seriously limited in the 944 - thin doors etc, would be interested in seeing the mounts etc once it is done

I had a rear speaker blow in the back of my old '44 once. When I took it into my local audio centre - he looked at it and said, speaker £40 (max), labour anything around the £150 mark. So £200 just for one speaker to be replaced. Apparently to remove the rear side panel's (where the speakers are hidden), you have to remove the rear quarter glass seal, and hence the rear quarter window. I looked at it after he said this, and I must admit I couldn’t see any other way.

I felt this was a bit OTT just to fit a speaker, so I left it... I would agree this is not the best car to add loads of ICE (although Battery in the boot is a nice touch).

Battery in the boot, I assume yours was a latter model as mine is under bonnet

Yep mine was one of the very last '44's - it had the 968 style spoiler on the rear, i.e no swimming pool...

I keep looking at fitting the 968 rear spoiler on mine, they look much better, but i am planning a complete re-shell over winter with a lightweight body so will do all that sort of stuff then

I have 2 944 cars now and a 928. I understand the auto 944 is a VW automatic, so you "might" be able to find someone to work on it, but it is surely the most rare of the 944 cars, as I only see one come up for sale in the US once in a blue moon.

Go with the manual. The manual car was tested to beat the 308 Ferrari, the Corvette, and even the 928 (by one point) in a 1984 head to head test, when all things were considered. The 944 won on overall balance, not 0-to-60.

good luck, and visit the following web page for tech info when you do find a good 944, they are fantastic cars and I have one in the parking garage right now, soon to be fired up for the drive home.
