A few years back I remember the FIA banning those little wings towards the back of the car just in front of the rear tyres. Now they seem to be back, what's the deal with this? Has there been a rule change I've missed?

IIRC it wasn't those they banned but the "Monaco" extensions to the rear wing as below. It's a big pic so I'll post the URL

The winglets in front of the rear wheels are ok.

Back in 1983 and 1984 many F1 cars had small winglet extensions on the end plates of the rear wings. They were banned from 1985 on. Basically, the current winglets and flip-ups are placed in about the only location left on an F1 car where aerodynamic devices can be placed (excepting the main front and rear wings, of course).

I don't like all these "fiddly" bits on F1 cars. They should be got rid of along with barge boards etc.

I was in a talk last night with one of Jordan's designers last night. Fantastic stuff, completly intrigued by it! He was showing us the exact regulations for what they can and can't design and stuff along with were and how they test stuff.

Makes me wish I had become an engineer rather than a Computer Scientist

I thought that there would be lots of scope for computer scientists in modern F1 - unfortunately.
